One point worth noting on this morning's sentencing story. Shabana Mahmood has written to the Sentencing Council urging them to change course. But a government source confirms this morning she cannot order them to do so. So on April 1 a new sentencing regime will take effect which the Lord Chancellor herself has described as a "two-tier sentencing approach". That seems to be massively significant

He has every right to post his views as he likes, as you do, and although I don't like seeing posters banned the comments this morning are ridiculous. But it's not really. I don't understand why there are constant own goals being scored, lending to tonnes of ammunition for those who believe there's "two-tier" justice. The recommendations of the sentencing board to have PSRs for select groups of people only, was unbelievably stupid, and to suggest that women, ethnic/religious minorities and basically anyone other than straight white men deserve different treatment is political suicide. Those who sit on these boards seem to have absolutely no concept of the optics of statements like that. Now I know a fair bit about PSRs and how they're used to assess risk from a previous role, but the vast majority of the general public don't. How could they not have seen that statement looking ****ing outrageous to average Joe? No one is going to read what PSRs are and what they (should) do. Nope, they're just going to move further and further to the right and assume, fairly in this case, that the government is trying to **** them over. It's almost the same as the conversation we were having over Aid and the foreign office "buying Porsches" for the Albanian prison service. By not explaining exactly what the situation is, the government allows others to run the narrative. Given the state of the world at the moment, I do wonder how the government is going to explain to a 20 year old white male from Doncaster, that it's in his interests to take a Russian drone to the face when he feels every aspect of British society is there to **** him over.
I thought the sentencing board was separate to the government so I am not sure what they should have done about it? Ideally they would have seen this before the opposition so they could have the statement removed, but nobody is defending the wording.
Oh I’m not saying it’s not absurd. Of course it is. And as you say, it’s an own goal. I’m just saying it’s probably not going to happen in reality (though granted, I’m not clued up on the mechanics or process of these things).
But it's too late now. Even if it's totally scrapped that's going to be accepted as a fact. And more to the point a group of people in power thought that this was acceptable to put out. Unbelievable naivety.
I'll answer this for a one time only, so you know the reason. It's you I don't reply to not what you are posting. The reason is, you jump to the racist or some other ist, or phobic accusation as a goto reply particularly if you can't answer the point. I'm not going to engage with posters who roll that insult out to silence or win the argument and you are that type of poster. Also gotchas have their place when someone makes a statement and is then shown to be a hypocrite or self righteous. There's plenty of opportunity for gotchas on this thread. You do it yourself and the fact that you call it out as something unworthy is hypocritical in itself. GOTCHA.
