Official - If the goalkeeper holds the ball for more than 8 seconds, the referee will be able to award a corner kick to the opposition! ⏳

This rule has been approved and will be implemented next season by The International Football Association Board (IFAB). ✅

My understanding at present the rule is an indirect free kick to be awarded for more than 6 seconds. So why not just in force the present rule instead? Or looking at it another way, the keeper can now hold onto the ball for a further 2 seconds <doh>

Because its difficult to implement and a indirect free kick is disproportionate to what is occurring.

I cannot see this change being implemented thoroughly as refs have enough to remember. At grass roots level it wont be happening. The 11 a side game is not futsal where time constraints are a major part of the laws.

Too much fannying around with the laws of the game as it is. Give Jordan Pickford and the rest of the keepers lying on the ball shagging it some yellows and they will stop all that hanging on to the ball!!

Liverpool used to be the kings of that back in the 70’s especially in cup ties against lower league opposition
It killed every game but they invariably won the vast majority
They did it against us in the FA Cup 6th round at AG in ‘74 where they continually passed back to Ray Clemence from the half way line
Inevitably they broke away and scored in the second half and won 1-0 and they went on to win the cup that year beating Newcastle 3-0 in the final

I know, I was just pointing out how such actions used to ruin a game
It's always the same with rule changes, it's never for the majority, or as you say, kids, disabled etc
