Genuinely surprised reading his: I thought the whole point of Werner was to have somebody who would dribble at pace down the flank ...and I've reopened the can of worms on Johnson, haven't I? please log in to view this image
If he wins Europa then he deserves to keep his job despite the awful league campaign. I can’t see that happening though and still think this season ends up with no trophies and a league finish of around 14th.
Chelsky did it. And they're a paragon of a well-run "business of own account" football clubs, are they not (BobbyD to confirm) ??
Spurs is a very well run business- the best in the PL. So says football expert, Kevin Maguire. Best stadium, American Football and Beyoncé. He goes on to say it that “if you take the football out of it”, it’s a perfect business model. But if you take the football out of a football club, it seems to defeat the object. It’s about winning games and ultimately, for a top level club, winning trophies. I don’t think any fan rejoices in having the greatest profitability. You don’t get the impression that the Spurs hierarchy could care less about that, although surely they must realise that a perpetual lack of success will having a bearing on profitability somewhere down the line. Or perhaps they don’t want profits dented by paying too many win bonuses.
You do not employ Mourinho and Conte unless you are trying to win trophies. It doesn't take much thought to see that it is a ridiculous notion to run one of the elite clubs and not want to win a trophy or two. The fact is that trophy winning is almost the preserve of the very top 3 or 4 teams, it's quite unusual for any other teams outside that top 3 to win anything. One of the reasons for Europe to introduce the Conference is to try to spread the cups. Newcastle, like Spurs have been good enough to reach finals in recent times, but not quite good enough to go that final step. Spurs used to be known as a cup winning side but mid-table in the league. Ironically, this season is following that old Spurs pattern all we have to do now is win the Europa, and that is more realistic because we will not have to face any of the current top sides in the process.
Los Ladrones sacked Jupp Heynckes a little over a week after winning the Champions League in 1998, so there's precedent there, long before dysfunctional ****shows like Man Utd or Chelsea sacking managers within days or even hours of winning the FA Cup
Yeah but clubs like those frequently win trophies, if Spurs win a trophy then Ange will definitely keep his job and rightly so. I just don’t see Spurs winning Europa though so expect Ange to be gone after the season review.
We talking about sarri? To be honest i thought we got rid but reading about it, it was mutual. He went back to be closer to his parents. I do remember i was a fan even though it was so tippy tappy football but i know the fans at the time were not pleased with him as they didn't like the play and also jorginho got abuse for being hit figure head
Interesting. We didn't sack benitez but fan hostility and being called interim manager meant he was annoyed and planned to leave at the end of the season.. I do remember not liking him but i also remember feeling sorry for him when he was being booed. Still he won the europy and got us cl so he was fine for us Maybe i have been suckered into the cutthroat early days of abramovic as i thought most of our managers were sacked lol
I think that’s a bit too simplistic to say as such. We hired two world renowned “win-now” managers but barely gave them any/ many “win-now” players. I think Levy and co probably thought that they’d replicate their success here without the financial backing they’ve usually received. We even saw both managers somewhat imply as such too, Jose with his infamous “same players different coach” speech and Conte’s monumental rant after the Southampton (I think) game. To put it into rough context too, Mourinho was backed with around £100m during his tenure. Conte was backed with around £160m during his tenure. Postecoglou has so far been backed with around £320m. If we’d given the level of backing we’ve done with Postecoglou to either of those, it’s very possible we’d have won something.
I don't disagree but the reason they employed Conte And Jose WAS to win something. The fact that Ange HAS been backed is the change I am supporting
But that just shows the naivety on the board’s part and why many fans are so critical and tired of it now. You can also argue it was a cheap ploy on their part too to make it look ambitious. Hiring Jose and Conte on paper sounds amazing, giving them a mix of players they didn’t want and not enough players either implies the ambition wasn’t ever truly there, it was just possibly a PR stunt - that eventually backfired anyway. Now with Postecoglou, it feels like they’ve changed their approach to some degree (we still don’t target enough “top players”) but for probably the wrong manager. £320m done and it feels like another £320m is needed.
Once again I agree. It probably was naivety to not back M and C ands that why I am pleased with the change in policy. I have more confidence in Ange than you . For me he is a manager with good people skills and lots of experience . If we stay with him I think we will get to where we want to be. But I am under no ilusions that Spurs will probably sack him unless he wins the Europa. If they prove me wrong and stay with him I will be delighted. We need Time a nd stability for our young team to mature. Unless he loses the players Ange should stay IMO
You need time and stability for the right pick. Is Postecoglou the right pick? I’m not so sure nowadays. I think he’s a great motivator and a very likeable guy but I think he’s quite an amateurish coach and tactician. I feel like more of our players have regressed under him than progressed - and the ones that have progressed weren’t even in his early plans, they were outcasts that he’d been forced to use due to the injury crisis that I think he has to take a large portion of the blame for. He’s here til the end of the season though so I’d love for him to end it greatly with a Europa win. Otherwise it’d be an utter car crash of a season.
Benitez. Sarri. It matters not. Forced out by supporter vitriol, or given the boot by the owners. It matters not. What matters is that a PL manager can win the EL and then be shown the exit, because the club you support is such a paragon that they are a precedent others should aspire to follow,
Every time I look at the numbers I come to the same conclusion...the policy has been entirely consistent and it's to spend all the cash we are allowed to on the team. The reason it has gone higher recently is because we've had more income.
I'm not sure it was PR just for PR sake. I think hiring Jose and Conte was 'PR' for Kane. Kane wanted to leave unless the club met his ambitions. The club attempted to show ambition with the least amount of expensive moves possible. Hence why Rodon was signed instead of the defender that Mouriho actually wanted. Similar with Conte. I actually think Conte came as a favour to Paratici who begged him after Nuno went pear shaped and he ran out of credible options. Similar story with not getting the defenders who he wanted. Rinse repeat. If either of these managers got backed we'd be winners. The irony is, we probably paid more to get rid of these managers than it would have cost to back either one with players needed to win. Dumb ****. I'm not sure yet either, but I think we should note that any regression of players under his watch should also take into account the loss of Kane. A player who we were far too reliant on. Everybody performed better with him on the pitch. Take him out of any team in the world and there will be a regression. We also split up the best goals and assists duo in PL history. To say he's amateurish Is questionable when the players all wanna play for him. Surely them downing tools is the first sign that the fit is wrong, and that hasn't happened yet. I also think there is another pundit/media cliche brewing around him not doing it in the Prem, "This aint Celtic" etc. I also think the we as fans have followed Levy, and the media, into this culture of seeing the sacking managers as the solution before it's really necessary, and before all other options have been exhausted. Give the guy a balanced squad of reliable and healthy players with suitable back-up options, and judge his performance then, especially when he has the trust and the excitement of the current squad and young players that are yet to come in. Yep the season would be a poor one if we don't win the Europa League, but there are many reasons why the season is poor that would be a challenge for any team in any league. We moaned last season when we wen't out of the cups early. Now we're moaning because the squad isn't deep enough to successfully navigate all of the cups. Hopefully the board will have learned exactly what the requirements are and will build the squad up to suit and roll again. If he doesn't win this season, and form doesn't improve next season with a fully improved squad, it'll become very obvious that he's the wrong fit and the problem. Like it did with Ramos. Plus, Pochettino will be a more viable option by then too.
Despite 24 years of running the club, squad deficiency is a perpetual problem. We got close to a semblance of balance under Poch, although we never had a viable option to rest Kane. From that highpoint, things have worsened considerably. We went into this season short of a CB, a LB, a right sided attacker and a suitable GK alternative. Not only did pretty much everyone on this site know that we were short on those positions, they're mostly gaps that have been there for years. The club paid Daniel £6m last year. I'm ****ed if I'm in agreement to that level of reward for that level of incompetence. Every season we're under prepared and inadequately resourced...as the 8th richest club in world football...under the best paid executive in world football. It's a ****ing joke. He needs to go!
