I don’t think the goal was his fault but I really do think he misjudged the cross completely. He obviously thought the striker wasn’t getting to it. If he’d stood his ground he may well have saved it.

Didn’t put a foot wrong and even his kicking was decent tonight, hope he can kick on (no pun intended) from here

Just showed the 2nd goal on sky again. Superb movement and an even better cross. Love that.

Our second goal is the perfect example mind of why we shouldn’t micro analyse every goal we concede

It was an unstoppable cross and an unstoppable header after brilliant movement. Very little Wednesday could have done. But I guarantee their fans are hammering their defending in the same way many of us do whenever we concede.

Sometimes it’s just too good. And this one was.

I don’t watch any punditry any more, on any game. Switch on at kick off, switch over at half time and straight off after. Hate watching people who have failed at staying in the game because they’re too thick to manage / coach talking about the game to suit narratives

I suppose all the big clubs will be adding Mayenda to their watch list now as well as all our others on it.

    https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/20...-sunderland-mayenda-returns-to-haunt-the-owls

    Anthony Patterson: 6/10

Poor decision to come for the equaliser but had been left exposed by defensive mistakes in front of him. Made a great save shortly after to keep the score at 1-1.
    Trai Hume: 6/10
A few issues with Gassama down his side but handled him better as the game went on and put a peach of a cross onto Mayenda’s head for the winner.
    Chris Mepham: 6/10
Very poor in the lead up to their goal, took a heavy touch, got out of position chasing it and then let a runner in behind him. Did OK other than that and made a very important block late on.
    Luke O’Nien: 6/10
Defended well for most of the game but like the rest of the defence, was poor for their goal. Some important blocks and interceptions though to make up for it.
    Leo Hjelde: 6/10
Got an assist after playing in Mayenda for the first goal and defended well down the left. Got a bit lucky early on with a handball in our box.
    Dan Neil (C): 7/10
Really put a defensive shift in, used the ball well too but had to work hard to keep the home side at bay. Read the game brilliantly to win the ball in the lead up to the winner.
    Jobe Bellingham: 7/10
Made some very important defensive contributions, was in the right place to clear after a dangerous ball into our six yard box, made a great blocked tackle on the edge of the box and often got his head on the home side’s corners.
    Alan Browne: 6/10
Tidy enough and worked hard but lacked a bit of sharpness at times, understandable after such a long lay off.
    Patrick Roberts: 6/10
Final ball was missing but caused the home side plenty of issues when he cut inside into space.
    Romaine Mundle: 6/10
Not hugely involved and like Browne you could see he is a bit rusty but worked hard to protect Hjelde and had a couple of bursts forward, one of which resulted in a free kick that almost resulted in a goal.
    Eliezer Mayenda: 8/10
Easily our best attacking outlet, good movement and finish for both goals and almost set up a goal for Browne with a tricky run down the right wing.

    Substitutes
    Wilson Isidor: 6/10

Didn’t get much chance to impress as we saw out the game after scoring the second before he entered the pitch.
    Dennis Cirkin: 6/10
Helped us see out the win.
    Chris Rigg: 6/10
Made some tenacious tackles down the right after coming on.
    Harrison Jones: 6/10
On for his league debut and only had a couple of touches but used the ball well.

Man of the Match: Eliezer Mayenda
Has to be my man of the match after scoring both goals with real striker finishes. Made a good run and finished well for the first and then ran off the centre back for the second, heading home in style from Hume’s pinpoint cross. Looked a danger whenever he had the ball around the opposition box and on the break.
