I think that Starmer's positive meeting with Trump has been overstresed. Trump will flip flop in his decisions and , when things turn bad , Starmer's proximity to Trump will prove toxic and encourage the Left to plot against him. In my opinion it just looked like Starmer was doing his best to be sociable and not embarrass either Trump or his ridiculous sidekick Vance. I would have been more impressed if he had declined the invite and broken off diplomatic relations with the US. It is becoming clear that Trump is being seen as liability in the US.
I think Trump is all bluster, to be honest. You can’t take anything he says seriously. Best to keep him appeased and we are more likely to get what Europe needs.
I ve met two Americans that have shown me that you can’t pigeon hole an entire nation. Back in the 70’s I was on holiday with my wife and another couple, on Corfu. First foreign holiday, first contact with foreigners. One day we were walking to the beach and had to go over a stile. Just as we got there an American girl arrived coming the other way. As she got on the stile, I asked if she could manage. ‘ Don’t patronise me, asshole. Oops, The following day we saw a bloke with a watermelon, so we asked him where he got it. He said he couldn’t eat it all and gave us half. A different American, different attitude. I am very quick to see all Americans like the first one. Have to remember there are plenty like the second one. For every Trump there is a Bill Gates, both very rich. Here endeth the first lesson. Amen.

Loading... One of the things I like to do for my amusement of colleagues is to joke about how they would react if they had to deal with characters they admired in ordinary life. The typical example is how much respect they would give Sir Alex Ferguson if he was a groundwork QS and not a football manager. This is exactly how I feel about Trump. If he was on the same train carriage as you, I doubt if anyone would sit next to him let alone strike up a conversation. The interaction with Starmer felt like that in yesterday's press conference. The PM dealt with Trump like he was speaking to.a nutter you might encounter in a shopping centre. You do not want to be hostile unless he will turn on you and the best thing to do is humour him and politely reject his comments. In England , if you wanted to be ultra polite and had concern for their safety, you might call the Samaratins. In the US, you clearly elect them as President themselves. JD Vance reminds me very much of someone I worked with about 12 years ago. He was an idiot too and would make similar comments. Cannot see him getting the nod when Trump pops his clogs.
I heard from my wife that one of the candidates to be the new pope will be Filipino. I would expect the pontiff 's exposure on Tik Tok to increase if he wins.
I think we just witnessed the end of the special relationship. Starmer will be withdrawing that invitation to a state visit if he is to retain any credibility. I am inclined to agree that we need to break off diplomatic relations with the USA. Trump has put himself in the same bracket as Idi Amin, an absolute raving lunatic.

One of the first times I agree with Ian Thurmwood. The spin on Starmer doing well belies that he was obviously guided to try and do the Macron touchy feely thing and try to get a "correction" in but the whole thing was so awkward and in the end he just looks like he is trying to get through it without upsetting the dominator! The Dodds timing is pretty obvious infighting. Internal opposition utilising the timing to get a blow in on Starmer. The world is in trouble! That exchange between Trump and Zelensky should have people worried. Zelensky was right that the world did nothing when Russia move in. Everybody was too busy saying stuff, sanctioning while ignoring the sanctions and continuing to buy more and more Russian gas. We've had years of words. Trump is the other side of the coin to that but wowzers that conference was embarrassing all round. So we have Macron and Starmer being submissive and yes sir yes sir..............and Zelensky is the only one who has stood up to the bully boy! It is embarrassing for us and France. I don't think you can say that Zelensky has nothing to lose. He has everything to lose but Trump and Zelensky basically say the same thing; The world was only prepared to talk tough without actually backing up their words. I think something got lost in translation there in that conference and it it went t1ts up :0 The most laughable thing about the EU is their anger over tariffs? The EU tariffs everybody not in thet EU and are complaining about tariffs reciprocal tariffs beign imposed on them? So its fine for the EU to slap tariffs on non EU countries............but if non EU countries decide to do the same it is disgusting? He is also right that the US has been taken advantage of by Europe who have over the past 30 years spent less and less on defence and diverted it into other things instead expecting the US to protect them. But even though he is right on the main things above the way he goes about it is pretty shocking but maybe the EU especially needs someone to say "enough of the hints" and tell them to their face how hypocritical and operation it is!
