Off Topic What is a woke thing?

Ha, yeah all heard about it... We get asked one question about sleep problems in the yearly medical now as a preventative measure... Reassuring.

There were three of them (all Scottish) who didn't know each other prior, the killer tried to kill the third also, but other workers heard the noise, broke in and saved him.

The guy came back from his shift and smashed one with an iron bar in the back of his head who was sat at the desk with his back turned, hid the body in his bunk, went for dinner, came back with the other roommate and tried to kill him as well.

They'd been working 12 hour shifts for 5 weeks and then kept awake every two hours by a faulty evac alarm, and one of them supposedly had an undiagnosed mental issue and lost it. All had young families and no reason ever given for it.

 

This seems particularly beloved of all the people that actually say it’s a bad thing though!

So why is this thread surviving? The definition of 'woke' is that it IS political. From Wiki (and I know you can't rely on Wikipedia as it's self-edited but in this case it's correct) "Woke, since the 1930s or earlier, is used to refer to awareness of social and political issues affecting African Americans and is derived from the African-American English synonym for the General American English word awake. It is often used in the construction stay woke." Of course, since then it's been hijacked as a word and by those who don't want to see the under-privileged and under-represented get their fair share, and used to try and stop those efforts -- often by people who don't understand the history of the word, or even how they're using it. It's just an easy, lazy, right-wing shorthand. The very nature of the debate involves race and politics, so to have a football message board that allegedly has a no politics rule filled with these messages is ridiculous.

 

I'll tell you what is utter woke nonsense. The Department of Transport!!!!

I don't even understand why persons of non-aligned gender need their own harbours never mind a whole government department devoted to it!

I wouldn't say that the thread has been 'filled' with politics. Lots of discussion on race but it's been largely civil, and doesn't contain racist jokes, unlike another thread, which appears to have been deemed acceptable.

Are the people calling you that in the room with you right now? Can anyone else see them? Speaking as a (relatively) privileged white male, no-one has ever told me I am one. Do I need to get out more? This thread has been eye-opening, can't decide if the highlight was the complaint that there's too many black people in adverts, or the claim that there used to be some racism, but it was just another form of bullying.
