In recent seasons, the teams that use all the testing time available have been most successful; I think the worst this kind of thing ever backfired was on Mclaren in 2009.

I do not see this helping them much.

They are going to be called Mercedes AMG Petronas in 2012, don't see how this will help either.

i remember red bull have missed a pre season testing session for the last 2 seasons , i honestly think some of the teams prefer to devolope the car fully before it touches the track --

Thus relying heavily on wind tunnel performance and data in computers, in 2011/2012 can they really put more faith in this?

Although about a week isn't really going to make much difference, probably.

Missing a test implies confidence (or your HRT). Of course confidence can easily be misplaced and Mercedes balls up this years testing so why not play it safe?

Missing a test could go either way such as Brawn 2009, Red Bull 2010, or Mclaren 2009, Mclaren 2011.

...But that was when they had the power to run the old car and still be half a second quicker than the rest of the field.
Whereas Mercedes could be the only car on the grid that's new and still be half a second behind Red Bull, Mclaren and Ferrari... who Schumacher needs to beat if he wants his 8th WDC.

That moment when two comments send a shiver down a Mercedes' supporters spine ;) Thanks for that.

I wonder if they are holding it back as they think they have something unique on the car the other teams will want to copy. Brawn will always be a threat, and is only a matter of time until he thinks his way back to the front of the grid. (Hope not though).

Would be good to see Schumacher on the top step of the podium, but I'm hoping for a Ferrari revival.

The best thing to do is hold back on the manufacture of the car, if they have something amazing to show.. they will still have time to develop it in the 8 days left in testing.
Better to develop something great and play hard to get than make something ****e and play easy to get ;)
But this is a theory... and the chances of it working are really slim, Redbull got their ideas right. Lets see if Brawn can relive some of his old magic at Ferrari.

I think there are going to be a few disappointed Merc fans, I anticipate Mercedes staying about where they are in 2012 and I do not think that the reason that they are missing the first test is because they have found some silver bullet (ha) loophole in the regs because I think it is unlikely that with the regs being pretty old now there being any major loopholes left that have not been discovered and exploited if they were of any use.
