Scottish Sun are reporting that Russell Martin is a leading candidate for the Rangers job, after they sacked their manager at the weekend. Has admirers at board level and played there towards the end of his playing career
Could see it working out well for him there. As Magic has said, his possession style and playing from the back would work better with one of the top squad of players in a league and he would certainly have that luxury at Rangers, probably with funds to spend too. It would be interesting to see if he comes back here to sign a few of his buddies, e.g. Downes, Fraser, Smallbone etc
Am I correct in thinking this would benefit Saints? I'm no expert in football manager contracts and remuneration, but I believe you don't actually "pay off" a manager when you sack them. What actually happens is you just continue to pay their contract, whilst also paying their replacement, so in effect it does still cost the club to sack a manager. However, if/when the new manager takes a new job, I believe you stop paying their contract. Can anyone more informed confirm if this is the case?
I think this is one of those widely believed myths. I think there will be provisions in the contract that outline the payoff if a manager gets sacked, so the manager receives a lump sum when they are dismissed (in some cases they might not even get a payoff) rather than continuously being paid on say a monthly basis. The payoff may be paid in installments, but the manager remaining on the payroll for months/years after being sacked I doubt is how it works
Its hard to find any credible information online. It could well be you are correct in that they get a lump sum. However, I doubt that would amount to the full value of the contact as otherwise they'd be placed on leave and receive full pay until A. the contract expires or B. they decide to leave and take a new job. Either option a. or b. would be better for the club as they'd either get to spread the cost and avoid a lump sum (option a) or be able to stop paying him off (option b).
It might work out domestically, but how the old firm delivers in Europe is usually how a manager would be seriously judged and if Russ doesn’t adapt he’ll end up in the same situation.
Oh yeah no chance it will be the full value. Each contract could vary and be very complex about it (something like if you are sacked with x weeks remaining on your deal then you get 50% of what the remaining total is, this could then change week to week if they wanted). Could be that if you are performing as badly as something defined in the contract you don’t get any pay out. Basically they can put whatever they want in the contract but my suspicion is that the “norm” would be a % of the remaining pay gets paid to them which changes based on how long is left on the contract when they are fired.
Yeah they've only won the league once in about 15 years haven't they? If he wins the league they'll love him. He will have to win it though.
Yep. He told the club who he is and what he's about. The one big piece of credit that I'll give Martin is that he didn't hide how he wanted football to be played and what it would look like. It wasn't a surprise we couldn't do it in the Prem but we can't say we wasn't warned. Don't forget the ****ing idiots at SR chased him.
We had an identity under Martin, and we have **** all now. It didn't work out in the PL with the players we have, and he should have acknowledged that it was never going to; but his only real fault was being stubborn.
And signing loads of absolute ****e And getting us relegated with a record low points total. Record breakingly awful defence Record breakingly terrible at scoring goals But yeah apart from that, no faults
Just like NJ and Selles the last time around mate, this relegation will be Martins and Jurics' fault. All of them a ****ing curse on this club
I would place the blame on SR, Russell Martin, the players and Juric, in that order. It’s disgusting how many players SR brought in that it seems like Russell didn’t even want. There’s clearly no communication or clear vision for our recruitment at all.
Don't get me wrong, the managers have all been ****e. The players largely ****e. The buck 100% stops at the owners. This is all on them
The season's long been over for us and all I really care about is coming out of it with a bit of self respect and hope moving forward. Right now we are in the biggest mess I can recall since 2009 and the manager is not putting out fires, he is currently pouring petrol on them. He said when he arrived that he was already familiar with the players having studied us for a while but I call BS on that because he plays so many of them not in their natural and best positions. I get that the bloke came into an impossible situation but he has managed to make us even worse and nobody can figure what his stategy is. We are not high energy, we don't press, keep possession and the defence is still a mess despite the 5 at the back. I really think that he should go and Simon Rusk take over as caretaker to try and stop the rot before any more damage is done to what fragile confidence this group of players have left. Just realised that I should've probably posted this on The Juric thread.
