And speaking of session singers (which we probably weren't), something else I discovered relatively recently. On Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me), there are four backing singers. Three of them went on to have hits in their own name. They were Yvonne Keeley, Linda Lewis and Tina Charles. The fourth one was Liza Strike who did put out singles but I don't think had a hit.
RIP Roberta Flack An incredible singer and a true 'Great'! https://news.sky.com/story/killing-me-softly-singer-roberta-flack-dies-13316349
Foe reasons I can't fathom. I have a very strong memory of 'Killing Me Softly' being record of the week on Radio 1 (Noel Edmonds?) Breakfast Show. It wasn't like anything that I'd heard before...and possibly since. RIP.
The Stranglers, at The Roundhouse, on Halloween? Sounds good to me... ...I wish it wasn't Buzzcocks on supporting duty. Diggle's coke fuelled performances just piss me off now.
Well, it was on this compilation album that was in my collection until 3 months ago... Maybe it was Alan Freeman's show?
Linda Lewis, wow what a voice and an all round nice person and she just so happened to be crush of mine back in the day
I have similar strong feelings about hearing First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - absolutely blew me away. Much covered since (I know her version is a cover of a folk song) but never bettered.
Coincidence, a mates emailed me today , he asked if I remember seeing the Stranglers playing in our local record shop in Watford, what was it called and what year did this happen , it was Past and Present Records in St Albans Road but as for the year I can only guess at early 80s . It was a small shop and it was rammed with over a hundred outside spilling into the road That place relieved me of half my wages on a Thursday on my way home from work after reading the NME
There's an article today in the Watford Observer about them playing there in December 1995. Did your mate write it after emailing you?
He could have , I remember that the band turned up with their gear in a hearse which was confusing as the record shop was next door to the Co-op funeral director The band played an acoustic set and there were only 3 of them that day , as for it being 1995 ? I don't remember it as late as that
I knock about with mates who can remember pretty much every gig they ever went to, which venue, year, support act, set list, etc., etc. I've gone from being pissed at most of them, to having the memory of a goldfish. I remember bits and pieces, but I'm living in the moment, more than storing stuff away.
Bloody typical, I leave my Youtube recommendations alone for five minutes and I somehow summoned a group of demonic waifus...
Zimmer wasn't always the mighty composer he is today. In the 80's, he was grubbing around writing **** like that and playing on The Damned's Black Album. To The Damned family, he will always be the bloke who 'overproduced' History of the World (Part 1). It's actually written that way on the album credits. I ****ing hated 'Going for Gold' and didn't care much for Henry Kelly, either. Grumpy Old Bastard message ends.
To celebrate our retirement, Mrs B et moi allerons a la belle France pour la musique festival en Tilloloy. (Yeah baby, French A Level - Grade E! ) Great line-up on Saturday - Sex Pistols, Stranglers. SLF, Sweet and From The Jam. Iggy Pop on Sunday and all for Eur 99, plus an additional 10 each for camping. The campsite bans alcohol and ghetto blasters - the French are fun sponges! We will take the jalopy and include a Joan of Arc day trip to Rouen, a day at Versaille and some sleepy seaside towns for 'moules et frites'. I'm going to like retirement. A bientot, mes petits pois!
Just seen the news. It sounds like it was a release in the end, but he fought the ****er for years. I had an on/off relationship with the Dolls. I'd binge listen to them and then nothing for a year or more. They were a HUGE influence on early UK punk acts and remain so, for bands like The DeRellas.
