That oughta be enough power to make your Trabant turn a few heads.

I need to start looking for a new car soon. Minefield. Not too sure what to get, tempted by a hybrid but have heard very mixed things as to whether they’re worth it as most my driving is motorway commute

I have a BMW X3 hybrid at present. Fully charged about 25 miles, but it charges itself as you brake and slow down (engine breaking). Just travelling at a set speed on the motorway hardly charges at all. If you are stop starting around town it charges better.

Yeah hence why not too sure about one - albeit on m25 some days I’m stopped more than driving!

other option is a plug in hybrid as we have plug in stations at work

Hybrids are worst of both worlds.

Engines too small and carrying the weight of both batteries and engine.

You have to map your route and security of charging. If you are sure you can make your journeys and have charging points at home and at work etc then it's fine to go all electric.

But you have to have the charging at home.

Yeah. We could get charging point at home but given prob look to move in next 3/4 years not really worth it.

Need to have a think what’s best

If you cant charge at home you are looking at internal combustion and delay the electric route until you are set up.

Depends on your mileage then if you want to go the hire route or purchase route.

Mine is a plug in hybrid. I have just bought a Mercedes which is a mild hybrid so no plug in, but supposedly saving the planet

The battery is tiny on a mild hybrid. On the X3 which is plug in you lose about 2 inches across the whole boot space and are carrying a lot of extra weight in the battery and electric motors, but you are allegedly saving the planet

    Allegedly.

I think it's about home charging now. If you've space for the charger point then it makes sense.

We have about 20 chargers in work.but I have no home charger room so it's not an option period.

Data I read is old now so not sure if changed... but I think with hybrids it takes about 70k miles on average to offset the emissions/pollution from the manufacturer of the vehicle... So most hybrids will be better for the planet than an ICE over their lifetime. As almost all cars last longer than 70k... Pure Electrics take over 150k miles to break even..which most should last that long...

But that's if you don't have to replace the batteries. Overall though, hybrids probably are going to be better for the environment long term than pure electric or pure ICE .

If you look at the stats online, the miles per gallon hardly changes between 100% engines and self charging hybrids.

Last time I was car shopping I wanted a SC hybrid as I thought that was the way to go but it's just not worth the extra cost.

I won't go full electric or plug in so stuck with 100% engine

If you have an ordinary plug point outside you can charge overnight and keep between 80% and 40% comfortably
