Monty was my first keeper and the man is a legend but I've always had a soft spot for the flying pig. Step forward Barry Siddall. I always like a keeper that could clean out a centre forward. Though I don't remember too many goalkeepers cleaning out Billy Whitehurst. An honourable mention to Shay Given, could have been a hero but made the wrong choice.
Another vote for Monty here. Honourable mentions also to Sorensen, Turner, Siddall, Norman, Poom and Pickford. Hopefully we will be adding Young to the list in time.
Toss up between Turner and Norman for me in terms of fav. Maybe just edge Norman, I think, was heroic in the 92 cup run. Sorenson is probably the best technical keeper in my time.
Can believe no one has mentioned Iain Hesford. He was our number 1 when I first starting going to Roker. It still amazes me now that he was the best we could find, saying that compared to Camp he was like Gordon Banks
By gum lad ! Reading this reminds me that we’ve had few good goalies like. If l had to pick a couple it would have to be the one and only Jimmy Monty closely followed by Tommy Sørensen (had it all that lad).
Aye been fairly regular Champions League player since he left us. That year before we sold him to Liverpool he was unreal - just seemed to stop every one on one!
This is one of my favourite goalkeepers most recently at Sunderland ... ... that kid's face man please log in to view this image
