Are we signing De Niro on a freebie?

Guess we still need some experience.
Should be a decent finisher based on your discussions, bit of a sniper?

I thought there was only one scene of them playing Russian roulette. Syd seems to think there were quite a number of them.

Gone With the Wind is an utter bore. It did so well at the box office because there was virtually nothing on and it was extravagant for the time. All Quiet on the Western Front by contrast is an utterly excellent film.

It doesn't make me an idiot just because I don't go along with the crowd and blindly like a movie without reflecting on how it is presented.

You still haven't explained why you think it's excellent. Are you seriously saying it's excellent because lots of people say so?

In my opinion it was one of the best movies I’ve seen, opinions are like onions just a p and i in the way…never have I ever not watched a movie because someone else said it’s not as good as they thought, if I did that when my friend said chariots of fire is just about posh boys I’d of missed another wonderful movie.. just an opinion not an onion….

I'm not demanding anything. I offered an opinion and you responded to me telling me I was wrong without explaining why I was wrong.

The fact you can't even formulate a response of "Why did you like this movie" says it all. You just want to tell others they're wrong without being able to formulate an original thought on why they're wrong.

If you're seriously trying to say it's good cos everyone says so then try having an original thought Chazz. No issues if you like it, but tell me why YOU like it.

You're the one that picked an argument with me ffs. <laugh> I was talking to red top not you.

Have an original thought Chazz, please. Tell me one thing you liked about Deer Hunter. Did you like the music? The performance from De Niro? The cinematography? What was it?

And it was not about running although most of it was people running. For me it was a man’s struggle to be the best and another man that was just unbelievably talented, factor in the so called establishment at the time it made for a wonderful movie….

For me it was all of the above and many more, I sometimes sit and listen to the music and literally walk back into my young self. Remembering some of the things I got up to and got away with back then. For me it’s about the futility of war, of how friendship can be so close you’d give up your life for another, something I think would almost never happen these days with how selfish the younger generation is. There is so much more to the film I could write but it’s ****ing late and my coco is getting cold lol but I will leave you with this thought. When de Niro shot over the stag’s head and not kill it unlike the others ****ing idiots. For me that was such a beautiful moment… good night and god bless….

What an over the top reaction. Next time I'm talking to someone else and you feel like getting involved, please don't.

And that makes complete sense. Thank you for a reasoned response.

For me when it comes to those broad themes of friendship/futility of war I just felt there were a lot of films released around that time that dealt with the same themes. Apocalypse Now, Platoon, etc. and Deer Hunter just didn't strike me because the Russian Roulette theme just came off quite cheap.

But of course you're entitled to your opinion and makes sense to me why it would resonate with you.

Deer Hunter, it's a recurring theme through the movie where the characters are forced to play Russian Roulette as a way of drumming up tension. The director tried to claim it was something he saw in some newspaper article as happening with the VC then couldn't cite the article, then said it wasn't meant to have literally happened. Think he also tried to claim the movie was somewhat autobiographical until people pointed out a bunch of inconsistencies and then he backtracked on that too.

Honestly never heard of it, it’s a bit old though. At a 3 hour run time I’ll probably never get round to watching it either.

Watched it because my wife and I worked our way through all Best Picture winners to try to expose ourselves to movies we wouldn't otherwise watch as for the same reason as you, it's easy to have a bunch of movies in the cultural zeitgeist pass us by. Maybe that coloured my perception of it too as I was watching a lot of similar films around the same time, and watching it when it first came out may have left a different impression.
