Exactly this. I was just watch the highlights whilst getting our eldest to bed and I said pretty much the same thing to him. Tall Paul's movement in the box and to follow up on the shot from Sully is the reason we are going home with 3 points.
Part of the reason. We should be equally thankful to Ipswich's poor finishing and crap goalie though.
I’ll take any team’s disadvantage that works in our favour. We’re a bit short of such generosity this season!
So so so much this. You exactly right. I still don't get some of the comments I have seen tonight about TP. He is played to score. Job done
Really don't see the point of this comment. A few are happy TP has scored a vital goal to win the game and you want to down play it and blame slant it to poor defending. I think now of all times we need to celebrate positive contibutions
When we lose, I try to look for positives, when we win I often look for negatives. Also I'm not going to overreact to one win, just like I don't overreact to one loss. People are different, so just try to respect that. Don't get me wrong I'm chuffed about the result, but the performance wasn't brilliant, and against better opposition we will need to step it up considerably.
Not gonna bother with a detailed breakdown of the match. All I'll say is that I don't think we particularly played well nor deserved it but I honestly couldn't give a **** as we won an actual ****ing football match Felt so good to get a late winner against Ipswich after being at the last two games against them too. My favourite away for quite some time. I'll say it again cos it feels so good. We ****ing won a game UTFS
Sulemana has certainly come to life recently but had to laugh at Keown showing he knows nothing about Saints. 'I dont know why Sulemana didn't start, he's had a lot of injuries, he was a part of their promotion side'.
Why was Flynn Downes not in the squad? IJ: We had some problems during the week with him and today he didn't play. What do you mean by 'some problems'? IJ: No, I think I said enough. hmmm, what happened with Downes in the week?
I was thinking the same. He was the main RM fan boy, and probably had his nose put out of place. RM apparently interested in Gerrards old Saudi job? And he loves buying players from his old club.
In the cold light of day...thank god it was Ipswich, because not sure we would have beaten any other teams based on that performance. And worryingly, it's another goal conceded from a player just running straight through the middle of us. The Israelites didn't need Moses with us in town. No midfield to be seen and our CBs all over the place, just a nice wide runway directly to our goal, 'rollup, rollup'. Reminds me of the Tonali goal from the previous game and it's surely an issue that needs plugging asap because we can't keep rolling out the red carpet for teams like this. We don't score enough goals at the other end to keep giving them away so cheaply.
I think (haven’t watched it again) that THB went running up the pitch to win a header and didn’t which meant Delap had a clear run on goal.
Yeah THB tried and failed to win the ball in Ipswichs half, Aribo then failed to win the second ball or get the block in. Ipswich player then had a simple pass forward into acres of space for Delap to run on to. Wasn't eye of the needle pass like the ball from Murphy to Isak last week, didn't need to be because we were just wide open. The pass went right past Bree who was just stood in no mans land in the middle of the pitch, and suddenly it's Delap running through onto the pass straight through the middle, with Bednarek scrambling over to try and cover, and missing the sliding tackle. Ipswich had another man over too. I don't know the first thing about football tactics and positional play. I would assume that if you are playing 3 CBs and you want 1 to be aggressive, the other 2 need to fall back to more of a 2? Whereas ours somehow ended up in almost a straight line up the pitch.
Id say it’s as you say, one centre back attacks long balls/goal kicks the other two drop. I don’t think the centre back should be running past the midfielders to attack the ball though and maybe that was a misjudgement of where the ball would land/too much automation of “it’s on my side have to attack” By running past the midfielders means he likely is getting to the ball late which likely means he loses the header and is miles out of position. Regarding Bree and Bednarek positioning maybe they thought as it was a shorter kick that a midfielder would be under it so THB had the centre of the pitch so they went wider in a line, then when THB went bombing forward it ****ed their positioning over. Obviously all happens in a couple of seconds and so much of positioning is automated/muscle memory type stuff that it looks like they made assumptions about where the ball was landing and who was challenging for it
I pointed out at HT, yesterday, that we were trying to win challenges that we were never going to win. CBs were flying into challenges high up the pitch, trying to be aggressive, but getting nowhere near the ball and being out of position when the ball was inevitably flicked past them. I’ve seen on here about Juric liking marauding CBs, but if that means Aribo or Les dropping deeper, it helps create that massive pocket of space in front of our back line. I like that we are being more aggressive but it really needs to be controlled aggression that is applied at the right time and not in a headless chicken type of way.
