There's another interesting Pertemps qualifier at Huntingdon today. Gordon Elliott sends over top-weight Staffordshire Knot who tried to qualify at Leopardstown over Christmas and ended up filling the dreaded 5th place. Expect him to be on the premises and qualify in 3rd or 4th. Shanagh Bob returns to hurdles after two disappointing runs over fences and should go very close off 129 with the Final of this series probably now his main aim for the season. Zain Nights is already qualified for the final so may be looking to gain a few pounds on his rating in order to get in whilst Super Survivor seemed reinvigourated by the return to hurdles last time. A 3lb rise for him doesn't look harsh and he looks worth a dabble.
Winning start for Palladium. 2 lengths in front of a £25k Pethers Moon yearling from the Yorton Stud in Welshpool. Not sure what Wolf Moon went for later on but that doesn’t suggest that Lady Bamford has a bargain. Still they can always put the price of their diggers up to recoup the outlay.
I am not one to nibble at this normally, but putting the value of Palladium from winning a novice hurdle is somewhat missing the value of the horse. He is nicely bred (half to Panjari - black type from the flat) son of Gleneagles, who is still an entire. As a German Derby winner, he has good value for breeding - Fantastic Moon - 9k Sisfahan - 2.8k In Swoop - 3k and all the way back to the one I want to flag. Sea The Moon @ 22.5k Sire of - Allmankind, Tritonic, Teddy Blue So this purchase price isn't for a NH horse, its for bloodstock, and fair play to Lady Bamford et al for racing him. I hope he goes on and does well. The last one we saw like this was the ill fated Sir Eric who had won a listed race on the flat and kept as an entire.
Ah didnt realise he still had the tackle. That does change things of course. Not sure if I shelled out €1.4 mill for a horse that I’d be too keen to let him trail his crown jewels over hurdles at Huntingdon. Having said that if you see what JCB flog a digger for €1.4 mill is back of the sofa shrapnel.
