It is more of a straight arm salute than Musk did that is for sure.

I saw Gareth Roberts play quite a lot. You would have seem him more often based on our ages I'm sure.

Do you remember seeing him doing many Nazi salutes on the pitch?

Don't you find these discussions a bit silly? <laugh> <cheers>

Gareth Roberts and Brian Marwood visited me in Childrens Ward at HRI.
He was also captain when I was mascot.
I can confirm he is a lovely bloke and definitely not a Nazi!
I think in your picture he is showing how tall his wife is!

To be fair, if he was A Nazi, he's not going to announce it at a children's hospital, or turn up in Field Grey.

Garreth seems to have made a lasting impression on you. Billy Whitehurst and Iain Hesford visited me in HRI in September 1989 , I recovered. :emoticon-0138-think

It was, come on. The fact he then did the exact same one again deletes any notion of him doing it by "accident".

Try doing that exact hand gesture at work, or down the pub and see what kind of reception you get.

It isn't the first time Musk has dropped that kind of behaviour and it isn't going to be the last. Whether he does it because he believes in that kind of thing, or whether he's doing it because he thinks he's one of the cool "groyper" kids and is trying to be edgy, I guess we'll find out over the coming months.

But let's not pretend it was anything else because the reason doesn't particularly matter. Remember the backlash Prince Harry got for dressing as Hitler for Halloween? I don't recall many people calling that a funny joke, pretty sure the media went berserk and hounded him for weeks. If you're familiar with his behaviour over the last few months, this isn't surprising, but what shouldn't happen is exactly what, in a sadly predictable way, is happening and that's people finding reasons to excuse it. Maybe out of shock, or because he's on the same political side as them, who knows, but even mainstream, supposedly liberal outfits are trying desperately to suggest what it could be. Which is exactly why we've ended up in this situation in the ****ing first place. I remember the old conversations.

"You lot call everybody Nazis, change the record."

"No, only the ones who are doing fascist things."

"Well...you're still saying it too much. Stop."

Yeah. See, this is why that word was being used. Because it wasn't just thrown about, was it? The people who are now appearing in powerful political positions across the Western world are the people we've been calling fascists. And now, they're so empowered that they can step up onto the stage at the inauguration of the most powerful office in the world, do a Nazi salute and know that half the Internet will praise them because it's "so funny bro". Plausible deniability.

It's just a joke, bro. Right up to the point where they jack up the cost of your medicine and try to remove your citizenship. Hilarious stuff.

I think this thread nicely shows that people will believe what they want to believe, and then find 'evidence' to support it. I doubt few if any will change their opinions as a consequence.

I tend to look for opinions and views that are the polar opposite of mine, and then consider which best fits reality. For all its ills, twitter at least adds one more place to see ideas which can then be researched further.

I think some people would be well served if they looked at the actual definitions for the words they bandy around, like 'nazi' 'fascist' etc. and then consider who, if anyone best fits that definition. They are often used as an attempt to discredit or silence conversations, and that is not a healthy place to be,

Completely agree. People finding random stills of other people to somehow justify Musk making a Nazi salute are pretty sad.

Someone posted the video on reddit that Kamala's still was taken from.

I hope you're all sitting down for this. It wasn't a nazi salute.

“It can’t be a Nazi salute, he doesn’t have an SS uniform on.”

Some people are very, very naive when it comes to what X is actually like these days and it shows.

I'm genuinely grateful to those putting so much effort into posting worked examples to prove my point. But I do think my post stands on its own merits anyway. :emoticon-0105-wink:

He has obviously recognised that being far right will gain you a lot of followers and adulation so has jumped on that bandwagon, but I think it goes further, his family history is pro Nazi, his family migrated to SA because they admired apartheid....the saying, that no one is born racist, only raised racist, is probably quite apt.
