Good Morning. It's Thursday 16th January, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road Leeds could rekindle interest in playmaker after new Villa arrival Aston Villa's £20m capture of Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund earlier this week could have a ripple effect, potentially benefiting Leeds United in an unexpected way Whilst the Dutch International is set to bolster Unai Emery's attacking options, it casts a harsher light on Emi Buendi, who with just 71 minutes of game time this season has fallen way down the pecking order at the Midlands based club. With less than 18 months remaining on his contract, Emery is likely eager to offload him. Leeds are long time admirers of the 28yo Argentine, and could finally fill the creative void left by Georginio Rutter last Summer. please log in to view this image Guilavogui linked with Paris move Josuha Guilavogui's brief stint at Leeds United could be coming to an end just three months after his arrival. Media outlet Jeunes Footeux suggest that Paris FC, a second-tier French side that shares a RedBull investment connection with the Whites, are interested in acquiring Guilavogui. They currently sit joint-top of Ligue 2, and are desperate to add depth and experience to their squad during the Winter transfer window. With Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev returning from injury, a move to Paris FC could be the sensible option for Guilavogui, but where does this leave Leeds? Joffy has joined Hull, and with Crew off to Doncaster, it begs the question whether Leeds are making room for late January arrivals? please log in to view this image
Think Farke was proving a point against Harrogate by throwing on Firpo and Gruev that we nearly back to a full squad and we are going to be very careful this window. I see no money signings but I really hope we take advatage of the loan option atleast one quality addition from the Prem if possible. Surely now if Gelhardt gone and Bamford unable to walk in a straight line and Joesph still very raw we have to be looking for a striker/Number 10
Morning all I would be quite happy to see Guilavogui leave, he served a purpose which was cover for injuries and a hectic Christmas schedule, he was adequate in midfield but I wouldn't want to see him at CB again Bamford won't be going anywhere if he is injured, Joffy has had little game time since the day he joined, a loan will do him good, no idea if Crew will make the grade, the departures are good news.
Morning all. Joffy has gone on loan but how long has he left on his contract as it must be running down? Seems unlikely he will make the first team here so why not sell for whatever we can get for him now?
Morning all. All these lads we send on loan, I wonder how many over say the past ten seasons have returned to Leeds as a success. Id suggest a tiny number and usually first step in getting rid altogether
I think the idea or hope is that he increases his value with a good second half of the season at Hull
I only remember one ever coming back improved, Jermaine Beckford We signed Gybai for £5m and Tanaka for 3.4m - I just don't get what the theory is behind some of the fees
He's got a contract until June 2027, according to the club's website. https://www.leedsunited.com/en/news/joe-gelhardt-signs-long-term-contract-at-leeds-united Leeds United are delighted to announce that Joe Gelhardt has committed his future to the Whites by signing a new and long-term contract, until the summer of 2027. The 20-year-old has excited supporters since his arrival in the summer of 2020, with his quck feet allowing him to dribble past defences and create chances in attack, as well as scoring them. After a prolific time in the Under-23s, Gelhardt was given an opportunity in the first team and memorably won a 90th minute penalty against Wolves at Elland Road to claim a vital point in just his second appearance.
I’ve made a similar point in the past. Some teams loan players out to develop them for their first team whereas we seem to loan them because we have them on very long, well paid contracts and we need them off the wage bill for a period of time (or they have a clause allowing them to go).
Contract length is a double edged sword. Long contracts to young players are usually low value, they also secure a better price for those that do make the grade. Short contracts... and sod's law a real talent comes through and leaves for free. Who'd have been happy if summerville went to West ham for nothing? I think the club thought Joffy would make the grade so extended. It's not happened. I always had the feeling Gyabi's price was inflated to sweeten the phillips deal. Plymouth fans very divided on him, good games and horror games. Still only 20. The issue isn't the contract values and lengths, it's the assessment of the ceiling of the player. Which history tells us is a very difficult thing to assess, and which we've to some degree underperformed in. I've no problem with loaning out these guys to see if they catch fire... they need the game time and it helps with their wages. But in most cases if they're not good enopugh for our squad they're unlikely to tear league's apart and it's a shop window to cut losses. Does the occasional summerville outweigh the Joffy's? Can't be arsed to do the maths.
Last one was Klich. Before that was Beckford. I'm talking about a player coming back stronger and better than before
So there you go. Two in two decades out of probably 50 loaned out. Wouldn’t fill you with hope that Gelhardt will return as the new Haaland
On top of this, we are not producing many of our own, we went through a spell of buying other teams failed youngsters, Perkins and Greenwood spring to mind. These youngsters have already been assessed by coaches far greater than what we have.
Klich was cast out unwanted and blamed for a defeat under Christiansen, it was Bielsa who brought him back. He was 28 at the time of the loan so hardly sent out to improve in his ability
