Unless we can bring in a fullback to improve the starting line up, or at least realistically compete with Cirkin or Hume, I think we have enough cover as things stand. Left back: Cirkin Hjelde LON Hume Bennette Joe Anderson Right back: Hume LON Seelt (weeks aways now) Zak Johnson Injured Aji Huggins
Transfer Market has him at £9 million, don't think we'd be spending that much at this point unless we wer epretty certain they'd improve first XI, and almost deifnitely not for a utility player
The issue is the drop off from Hume and Cirkin to the others is massive. Fullbacks play such a huge part in our game and while I don't mind the odd game with O9 or Hjelde there we would struggle if Hume or Cirkin pick up a lengthy injury (and cirkin has picked up plenty of them)
That's fair and I mostly agree, but you'd have to ask what are these lads doing at the club if they're not capable of covering for injuries? Even the developing players we've identified and signed, this is the Championship not the Champions League. Also, players have to prove their worth, injuries and suspensions give them the chance to do that.
Well Hjelde's natural position is CB so he isn't going to offer what we want at fullback. O9 is better at centre half so the same applies, even Alese was a CB covering at left back. It would be nice to have a natural left back and right back cover
Sad as I had high hopes for him. For whatever reasons it never happened for him here. If the reports are accurate then I wish him the best for the future.
Okay, but that doesn't address the other part of my post, which is the most important part, especially if you care about player development, and I know many on here do.
Injuries in their position let them prone themself, say our cbs got injured hjelde could step in. But it’s not fair to say prove yourself in an unnatural position at full back
good to see Rusyn linked out. Would imagine a loan suits all parties because if he does well then we may be able to recoup SOME money (very doubtful it will be anywhere near what we paid)
Most clubs will have players not good enough to step up and replace the 1st teamers tho. Some will be signed to help out with the U21s and others will be younger players who aren't ready yet (Bainbridge and Johnson for example) We certainly aren't going to sign a LB as good as Cirkin but we ensure the drop off isn't huge (which it wasn't when Alese stepped in) If everyone was fit (Huggins and Alese) then we would be totally fine I prefer us going for a LB as I feel we have enough cover at RB
It feels like the club are fully preparing this month for a potential promotion, any potential deal is a loan with a view to buy if promoted. Not saying it’s likely but you’d imagine Sessegnon would be a similar deal if we were interested. On the one hand it’s a sensible in the circumstances of our league position, but you start to worry a little more that if we don’t go up, we’ve got a big rebuild job, especially as the young talents - Jobe, Rigg etc may well go en mass if we don’t get promoted. At least we’d have the money to buy well but would feel abit like a start again.
On your last paragraph, it’s worrying but a lot of clubs do it. When you have a brilliant chance at achieving something, the January window becomes tailored for that
Sooner he’s gone, the better. The fact he’s been subbed on in our last 3 games shows how poor the bench has been.
I think this is a bit of old school thinking tbh, players have multiple positions now and are signed with this in mind.
