As the big thaw starts it's interesting to read reviews of the 62-63 winter. Then, but for one meeting, there was no racing in the UK between December 22nd and March 9th. There was little sport full stop. The Pools Panel was brought in to give football results for the customers of Littlewoods and Vernons as outside of Liverpool and Arsenal (who both had underground heating) nobody else could stage a game for weeks.
Suddenly dog racing became the big attraction. I went to White City a handful of times with my Dad and other friends who had absolutely no interest in the sport, they were just bored stiff. The place was always packed.
Indoor Athletics really took off as a spectator sport and Wembley's Empire Pool was the place to be.
We have a week with no jump racing now and you'd think the World had ended.

When in the UK, we bought an old bungalow in 4 acres, knocked it down and replaced it with a house. From the time we moved out of the bungalow (only 2 rooms and a bathroom left) until we moved back in (with all bar the kitchen left to finish), we lived in a mobile home. We left only the bathroom of the old bungalow standing until we were able to move in and live upstairs in the new house. This was so we could continue to have baths whilst living in the mobile home (just a short walk of about 30 metres or so). However, in the winter the temperature dropped to -15 and for our mobile home water I was going out to the stand pipe (in dressing gown and wellies) and thawing it to fill up a big tank of water. Then having to walk down to the paddock with a sled hammer to break through the ice so the ponies had water to drink. Can't imagine doing that now. I suspect there was no racing on then either <laugh>
