yup, just look at any old 'out in the street' pictures that keep showing up, kids of all ages out together, playing and learning from each other then check out the 'street security' of at least one mother keeping guard and usually one out of focus further up the street... no one went past her.

i don't know the full story or indeed i doubt i ever will and i hate saying this but too often now, children are being allowed to be 'grown up' too early, dressed to the 9's in the latest brands, walking around with a hell of an expensive phone in hand, allowed to go drinking at friends/pubs and i honestly get sick of hearing 'what harm will it do?'...then these stories start to surface.

we have lost a lot since 'my time' but imo, common sense is most missed.

That's a brilliant observation mate and so true of my childhood.

We thought we were running wild and getting up to all kinds of things, But we'd go too far and overstep the mark with devilment. We'd ignore some unwritten rule and step onto someone's allotment or disturb the birds in a fella's pigeon cree. We'd be caught and get a clout. We'd run home, feeling all indignant, thinking we'd 'tell' and he'd be in trouble. By the time you'd get home the 'bush telegraph' had already reached yer mam and you'd get another clout <laugh>

But if kids from the next village came looking for bother there'd be repercussions. Either the elder lads would step in or your dad would have a word on the pit bus and they'd be 'checked'. You'd see them at school and they'd keep their distance. If ever it became a real problem yer mam would go and knock on someone's door, have a word and the issue dealt with.

Life was tough enough, for your parents, without feuds developing between streets, or villages, so it was resolved ...

... these days people, in impoverished areas, daren't say a word to kids without risking a kicking from a bunch of thirteen year olds or being stabbed. In areas of Liverpool, for example, the adults allowed, even encouraged, this 'Scally' culture to thrive but now they've lost control and the lunatics are running the asylum.

Sadly, as I was discussing with someone involved in the Salvation Army, the war on drugs has been lost and there's no way things will ever recover. The internet means children become adults far too quickly but don't know how to be grown up. I'd hate to be letting my kids go to school these days when they have to mix with social media bullies and teenage drug dealers.

We thought we were getting away with murder but, in reality, we were only allowed to believe that ...

... as you and the Boomtown Rats would say,

I think with regards to grooming gangs in northern towns, any semblance of community spirit, which was already being depleted by the death of industry was compounded by being labelled racist if you noticed the lads hanging around your underage daughters were brown or muslims. This idea of watching out for the bairns did exist but it wasn't able stand up to being called racist.

Could the bairns have rebelled against their parents by going out with different races until it became a norm? I remember visiting Swansea in the early 90s and was amazed, and slightly jealous, at the number of young white mothers with large black men.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean then. Dynamics like protecting local children (that are not your own) in neighborhoods were further broken down by being called racist or the threat of being called racist if you noticed certain trends. If parents should do better, then we should be aware that these social stigmas are so strong it would freeze a parent from doing what is required to save their child. People rationalise all kinds of insane things, dads and brothers were even arrested when they tried to save the (ie remove from a house) the girls. The whole thing is a big **** up, it's utterly unforgivable on a mass scale, a lot of heads need to role.

I was commenting on what I thought was your point, of locals protecting the bairns being broken down as fear of being labelled racist.

I think the racism came from the gangs after reading many of the court transcripts, these people are utterly grotesque and racist in a way most people cannot fathom.

If you want to rid racism with interracial relationships, may I suggest we start we pakistani women getting the treatment above by gangs of working class White men, after that point we arrive at point zero and we're all even and hunky dory and can finally move onto greener pastures.

Musk not doing any more than a certain Australian has far more subtly ( not very subtly ) and more successfully for decades.

aye, back then i would never say we were angels, far from it but we all knew 'the line' and anyone daft enough to step over it got what was expected...from his own parents/families as well as those who initially gave them a slap.

...and what is it with these knives now man, ffs if you could not handle it with your fists you just kept the hell out of it.

The shame of being dragged to someone's front door and having to apologise was mortifying.

You'd stand there, with your mam behind you, while you said 'sorry for banging on your door when you're on nightshift'

Then you'd get a clip round the lugs because you didn't sound sincere enough <laugh>

dinna, i thought the worst part was to come from the 'big lads', those that would back you to the hilt normally...when yer mam finally let you out and you had finally managed to get over the shame of being bitch-clapped by a 70 year old gannie, you walked up to the lads and they all put thier heads down and tutted, for the next ten minutes of being ridiculed and being told you should know better, a firing squad would be more welcome.

Don't know about gangs ' use, but I believe knives soared after Camerons govt wanted the police to do stop and search, but the civil rights people put a stop to it. Interestingly, recently during a tv interview with a campaigner it was stated that now the majority of youngsters are in favour of it.
