Hi All, Been doing a major cleanup, mainly to get my mind of on the field disasters and I have come across a lot of programmes , sticker books , a lot of books including the famous Rothmans year books. I'm sure a lot of you must have similar collections. Mrs PL is unemotional about it, ie doesn't care and says throw it all away, she doesn't understand the meaning or what memories are attached (because she's not into football) . I have a lot of programmes that my grandfather gave me ,some annuals and football books of varying types. A lot go back to the 70's and 80's when I was really into this stuff. Although I've had these things for years I haven't looked at any of it for ages. Need a bit of guidance, do I keep or bite the bullet and see what they could be worth to a collector.
Oh that's an interesting conundrum! Now I don't have a vast collection, but I do have some old programmes and books in the loft. A 1921 cup final 'team sheet" which was my granddad's is a personal fav along with various programmes from the 50's and 60's. Also have a few old Orient ones from their one stint in the 1st division! I'd personally keep, although I suppose it depends on if there are kids to bequeath to etc. Would they be interested in them? I suppose the argument is would you miss them? I used to be into Marvel comic books and had hundreds of them. Complete run of Spider-Man, X-Men, Fantastic Four etc. I sold them all years ago when I got married as they were taking up room and we needed the money, or so I thought. Have always regretted doing it...
Bingham , I only have a daughter, who understands all this suggested something similar. It's your life told in football programmes she said. Back in 73/74 I went to a lot of Orient matches with my best friend who was an O's supporter, that season they went mighty close to promotion missed by 1 or 2 points and Carlisle went up instead, I have lots of programmes from that season plus the Spurs ones my grandad went to. For every one you have you can recall what you might have been doing at that time. I know there is a market for this and some might be worth a bit, but is it a sacrifice of some family history?
I'd definitely lean towards keeping them, Perryman. Especially if as Bingham said you've got relatives to pass them on too. My Mum collected loads of programmes and old tickets when she went regularly, she's also got some stuff from my Grandad's era too and it's great to look at it all. I've not got as much memorabilia as them, I've got some programmes from big games like cup finals (yeah, they exist ), 125th anniversary, a few derbies and CL games but it's probably not more than 20. My main "memorabilia" from Spurs doesn't really have monetary value as they're all photos I've taken with my phone that I've got stored on a hard drive - one of the rare perks of growing up in this technological era. I've taken panoramics from every away ground I've been plus other photos from inside and outside the grounds with those I've gone with. Plenty from WHL too, especially lots from the final game there including some from on the pitch!
A Spurs fan I worked with years ago, brought a remarkable piece of memorabilia into work once. It was a photo journal, from the late 70s, recording Spurs fans home and away (mostly away iirc) over a couple of seasons. Hundreds of photos, taken on trains, in pubs, in the street, and on the terraces. It looked sort of like a Fanzine, but the quality of the photos was really high. Apparently it was once available in your club shop, but subsequently withdrawn. Ring any bells with any of you?
Don't sell it mate. I used to have a collection of scrapbooks, programmes etc that I made as a kid. My scummy family destroyed it all. Fortunately Mrs RCL encouraged me to replace them with stuff on auction sites. I went back to making scrapbooks for my girls when they were little and every year they want me to continue. Mrs RCL's dad saves spurs clippings to help me. I now have a programme of every spurs game I've been to, some tickets, scrapbooks from 1978-82 and a set of 3D posters from the late 1970s of Ardiles, Villa and Hoddle. Your grandads programmes etc are important as are yours. They are memories and your daughter is right.
Sounds like it might have been the "tottenham boys we are here " book. Very few printed and costs a bloody fortune now. Think it was associated with hooligans.
RCL, I wish my Mrs was as understanding as yours. Non footballing spouses just don't get it, they put up with it. It is definitely memories that mostly can't be replaced. My grandad often wrote notes on the programme , like team changes etc, so that makes it very personal. All my Mrs is worried about is the space it takes up . It stays! Thanks guys Buts lets keep up the chat, there must be others who have interesting stuff.
My wife is the same but does now at least tolerate it, as she knows there is sod all chance of ever changing me... My son is the same as me, and we have very long conversations about all football stuff at the dinner table, which we do to wind her up! At least she has our daughter, who is only fractionally interested in the football to talk too...
I'm currently making books for us about old and new whl. Had save cuttings and personally taken photos etc about the build up to the demolition of the old lady and the opening of the new ground...was lucky enough to go to the last NLD, Last FA cup game, Last European night and the last game at WHL and the first game and First European game at the new whl. Am currently collecting old news paper, magazine pictures of the old ground and original photos and post cards to go in them! I don't drink or smoke so this is my way of keeping outta trouble
Keep it , when I moved out of my parents I left behind programmes, photos taken by me and my mates of home and away games , dad had loads of very rare programmes from the double era and before and the Tottenham hand books , it was all stored in a wardrobe, but when my Dad died suddenly some of her sisters came to stay with my Mum and for some unfathomable reason the took every last scrap of my father's to the charity shops , all of our football collection ,watches, cufflinks and other personal belongings, when I asked my Mum Why? She could not explain
Alfie, The vibe I'm getting is to keep, and I am going to. Its a shame some people don't hold the same values to personal things. I made it clear to Mrs PL that the memorabilia stays, regardless of whether its taking up that extra bit of space. The digitalization of programmes etc makes it harder to seem tangible now, put it in the cloud and forget about it. Our vintage seem to put more value on it.
Jesus, RCL you're a proper soldier, Spurs will drive 99% of their fanbase to drink and/ or drugs... I'm part of that 99%
