Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, MD has died aged 57. The well known Brazilian footballer died today of septic shock aftr entering the intensive care unit of the Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo on Thursday. He has been in and out of intensive care since late August after suffering a stomach haemorrage, gastrointestinal bleeding and portal hypertension. In his career he played for Botafogo-SP (two spells), SC Corinthians Paulista, Fiorentina, CR Flamengo and Santos FC, ending it with the mighty Garforth Town(!) 19 February 1954 â 4 December 2011
Very sad. I heard today he had food poisoning. With all the problems he'd had, he probably didn't standard chance. Tragic.
I remember when Scotland played Brazil in 1982. It started off with David Narey's 'toe poke' which was probably a bad move in retrospect. It seemed to wake the Brazilians up and they pumped us 4-1, with Socrates getting an assist on the last goal. It's the only time I've watched Scotland be beaten, particularly by such a large margin, and not been absolutely gutted. The Brazilians were just such a pleasure to watch that you had to admire them, even though it was your own team on the receiving end.
You may find that you are wrong. You never know though, perhaps they will have a day of mourning and the GC will have fun taking the piss out of their loss.
