Portsmouth v Swansea Competition - Sky Bet Championship Venue - Fratton Park Date - 1 January 2025 Kick off - 3pm Following their deserved 2-1 victory over Luton next up for Luke Williams’ Swansea squad is a trip to Portsmouth on New Year’s Day. On Sunday, Myles Peart-Harris' stoppage-time winner saw the Swans claim a dramatic victory over 10-man Luton Town. Luton had looked destined to secure just a fifth away point of the season despite teenager Joe Johnson seeing red for a second booking midway through the second half. But on-loan Brentford midfielder Peart-Harris powered home a header to give the Swan a second home victory in three days. Luton had been gifted an early lead when Carlton Morris volleyed home after a howler from Swans goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux. The Swans, who had hit the woodwork through Eom Ji-Sung, deservedly levelled before the break when a goalmouth scramble ended with Goncalo Franco tapping in from close range. Luton improved after the break until Johnson's dismissal handed the Swans late momentum, with the pressure eventually telling when Peart-Harris struck. Whilst the Swans were beating the Hatters, Anis Mehmeti was scoring twice in the first half as Bristol City netted three goals in 20 minutes to coast to a win which sent Portsmouth back into the Championship relegation zone. The rampant Robins, with Mehmeti and Nahki Wells at their influential best, offered by far the bigger threat and could easily have been more than 3-0 ahead by the break. Forward Mehmeti set the hosts on their way, coolly finishing off a fine pass from Max Bird. City as good as sealed the points - and a third victory in four home games - with two goals in three minutes soon after the half-hour mark to move up to 10th in the table. Mehmeti swept home his, and Bristol City's, second by finishing off a lovely Wells cross from the left after a fine move and defender Rob Dickie's simple close-range effort ended any realistic chances of a Pompey comeback. The Swans have played Pompey on 33 previous occasions, winning 7, losing 11 and drawing 15. The Swans last played in Portsmouth in April 2011 when the match ended 0-0. The Swans team that day was: Dorus De Vries Angel Rangel Ashley Williams Garry Monk Alan Tate Leon Britton Mark Gower Darren Pratley Nathan Dyer Fabio Borini Scott Sinclair Turning to New Year’s Day, this is a match that the Swans simply have to win if they are going to mount a successful charge for a Play-Off place come the end of the ‘regular season’. I’m going for a 2-0 win for the Swans
James Linington will be the man in charge when Swansea City head to Fratton Park tomorrow. The Isle of Wight official took charge of his first EFL match in 2008 – a League One encounter between Yeovil Town and Crewe Alexandra – and has since been promoted to Select Group 2, working mostly in the Championship. Linington has also been fourth official for a number of Premier League encounters. He first oversaw a Swansea match in 2009 – a second-round League Cup defeat to Scunthorpe United in which he sent off Garry Monk, Gorka Pintado and Angel Rangel – and has blown the whistle on a further 13 matches involving the Swans. He was most recently in charge of a Swans game for a 2-1 win at Coventry City in September 2024. On Saturday, Linington will be assisted by Alex James and Graham Kane. Andy Davies will be the fourth official. (So he lives around 15 or 16 miles away from the ground?)
Is there some implication there Taff? We should win but it's the Swans And we're playing a bottom of the table team Still.... I'll say 1 - 2
Well, in our current form we should be able to win this match, but that was also the case against Hull a few matches back and we all know how that went. A hopeful 1 goal victory for me.
Well I’m taking my grandson to his first game tomorrow, he can’t wait. Nice only have a 15min drive to a game. Remember taking my son to his first game v Reading in the cup, my fondest game was against Portsmouth in the FA Cup, sold out away end so bought Pompey hospitality seats shoved us in the corner of the main stand, don’t think we should have cheered when Dyer scored, then got moved to the away end for our safety. Lovely lad in hospitality apologised and took my son down to the changing rooms and he the team seat signed by all the players. Great day. Onto tomorrow’s game, so going for a 2-0 Swans
Thanks Taff. It would be a good way to start the year with a win. The weather looks awful so maybe a hard foughtv1-1. Have a good day with your grandson Never.
Cheers mate. The weather is lousy, wind just picked up again and just started to rain. Just heading out into it now. Let’s hope for a Swans win.
