I see it as more beneficial for us for next season, and for his development to stay at Wednesday for the season playing 90mins every game. It is more up for debate now that Martin has gone though. If Juric rates him and starts him regularly then sure. I’m not sure he’d help too much in the PL right now though. I could see him only getting a couple of starts and a few sub appearances and that doesn’t really help anyone.
I know what you mean, but I'd rather do that than wazz money on that position (and it's a position that needs reinforcing).
Yeah I agree there’s no point in chucking money at a player for that position either when we are relegated anyway. Plus Downes and Charles will be among the championships best next season, and we’ll also need a lot of our available resources in the summer to go towards our attacking positions and GK. I just don’t think Downes will miss enough games this season for it to be worth it, and Ugochukwu shouldn’t really either once this hectic period of games is over. Only thing that makes me edgy about leaving that position as is (and just not buying anyone in January at all) is the shadow of Derbys record looming large over us. I still think we can avoid that unwanted honour, particularly when Juric gets time on the training pitches with the players and their fitness improves. I mean, think how **** we’ve been this season, and yet if big match altering decisions hadn’t gone against us on multiple occasions, whilst we’d still be getting relegated, we wouldn’t be worried about Derbys record at all.
Does anyone actually think he’s going to be any good? Feels like a hopeful punt, probably just because he’s Brazilian so he must be good. A fourth LB to the list of LBs that aren’t as good as our RB playing out of position. I know nothing about Wellington btw, basing my negativity on it feeling like another SR special.
From the reports on him when he signed sounds like he can’t defend at all but was alright going forward. Definitely sounded like more one for Goztepe with the hope that he grows into a player for us/sell for a profit but maybe that’s changed
Looking at Welington’s stats, he’s not over effective when it comes to assists, so if he can’t defend………….
Agreed. Be knocked out if he’s any good in this league this season. Maybe next, which is what I think he was purchased for.
Was described to me as our "Yuki on the left" so yes, won't be able to defend, full of mistakes, but loveable and decent going forwards.
FORGOTTEN Saints signing Welington Damascena has formally joined the club today upon the start of his contract. Welington, 23, signed a pre-contract deal with Southampton in the summer, agreeing to join the St Mary's side following the expiration of his Sao Paulo contract. His deal with the Brazilian giants ended on Tuesday, December 31, allowing him to formally complete his move to the south coast at the start of 2025. The Daily Echo reported in the summer that the plan was for Welington to remain at Staplewood rather than depart on loan. Fellow Brazilian Juan, also signed from Sao Paulo, officially joined Saints in the summer before departing for Sport Republic sister club Goztepe. The forward has enjoyed a productive start to life in European football. He has scored three goals and provided four assists across 14 Super Lig games. Left-back Welington faces stiff competition for minutes at Southampton, who are already well-stocked in his position. Kyle Walker-Peters has most recently been deployed on the left while Ryan Manning and Charlie Taylor are more natural options down that side. Taylor, who arrived on a free transfer from Burnley, has not started a Premier League game since Southampton's 3-1 defeat at AFC Bournemouth on Monday, September 30. Welington's fitness status is currently unclear as he ended the Brazilian campaign early after suffering a hamstring injury. He has not played since Sao Paulo's 3-0 win over Vasco da Gama on Thursday, October 17 and missed the final seven games. Despite an injury late in the season the former under-23 international managed 48 appearances across all competitions in 2024. With the Brazilian campaign already over, Welington moved to England before his Sao Paulo contract expired. The Brazilian cup winner was in attendance for Southampton's narrow 1-0 defeat to West Ham United on Boxing Day. Welington will become the third Brazilian to play for Saints should he make an appearance, following Guly do Prado and Lyanco.
Welington'sfitness status is currently unclear as he ended the Brazilian campaign early after suffering a hamstring injury. Welcome to Saints. You won’t be lonely in the treatment room, Stewart and Larios have made it comfortable for long term residents.
Expected this. It will benefit us just as much as him. 4 months in the championship should give us an idea of how he can contribute next season.
Absolutely agree; all being well, I think our centre back options of Bednarek, Wood, Stephens (that'll upset some) & Edwards will suffice at that level.
This could be interesting. I haven’t watched him at all at Wednesday but if he has a good enough season to attract top flight interest in the summer then our plans to use him next season may go out the window. He might not want another season in the Championship. Like Onuachu he may feel like we ****ed him around, I’m sure there were some things said to him when signing (he was the most expensive signing in the Championship last season after all) and he didn’t feature regularly then was loaned out when we got promoted. Wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t feel like he “owed” us anything and would jump at the chance to move
