I must admit that my memory is not great as all the games and dates seem to blend into one these days.
Played there in 86 Sunday league Cup final, after watching from the east and south stands and gushing over how well it looked I was well disappointed in the pitch, bald spots all over, rock hard, and pretty disappointing tbh, mind you it was May time I think. The changing rooms though was like walking into the revered inner sanctum!
Great story Trumpton..Your right. It must have been 68/69...I later looked it up on Soccerbase and City won 2-0....I'd have been 12...Geez....I must admit I thought it was Paul or Pete Rudd, I'm sure he was off 5th / 21st ave area on NHE, but I could be wrong on that big-time. He may have been known by a different name.
A fully functioning (north stand still intact) BP was a cracking ground when I first started going in the mid 60’s. Time just caught up with in the end. I love the MKM, it’s a proper 21st century stadium but it’ll never have the soul that BP had for me.
And when the north stand was redeveloped (turned into a supermarket) there were pictures and plans of a covered stage on top with promises of events and concerts.
Incredible they demolished the North Stand after only 35 years, nowt was it, we are into almost two thirds of that at the KC already.
We can look back on BP with rose tinted nostalgia and remember the good times, but it was dump by the end. If we hadn’t have moved when we did the same fans would have spent the last 20 years moaning about how poor it is and how its was holding the club back. The MKM has given us the most successful two decades in the clubs existence, and they wouldn’t have happened without the stadium. For me those memories far outweigh any possible reason for staying at BP.
Dr Death's (one of our better owners, well, part owner) Hollywood Bowl. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
As for the big hall at the back of BP, they must have had some advance technology that enabled them to recreate Antarctica inside a building
A couple of memories I have from the early ‘70’s but no idea what games: Two oppo fans getting onto the pitch just before the start of a match, running to the centre circle and flicking the v’s at us in Bunkers, then one of them legged it but the other one didn’t notice and carried on until he suddenly realised he was on his own, panicked and legged it too, diving head first into their fans off the pitch. On a separate occasion, an oppo fan being carted off by two coppers and one of ours jumping on his back, with them all ending in a heap on the ground with punches flying. One game I do remember or rather after match, was against Burnley, early 80’s, John Bond was their manager at the time, if I remember correctly, first game of the season, they were expected to do well and we destroyed them 4-1. I had to drive into town to pick up my girlfriend of the time (later wife but now ex) and Burnley fans were running amok all over Boothferry and Anlaby road. Traffic came to a standstill and I saw one of their lot get collared by a copper but he kept trying to get away and the copper just clocked him and he went down like a sack of spuds.
In fairness to them that picture is from December 2008, when the club gave fans a last chance to visit BP before demolition work began. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Sunderland (and many others) used to bring thousands and totally fill Kempton and more. Who was the City nutter who ran from Bunkers and literally dived headlong into them in the Kempton? Late 70s maybe?
