Kinda more than that in that's it's not just a new coach, but a Tan- Mk 11 (improved diction and go faster stripes) announcement, Acun Q&A and pre match presser all rolled into one. Seems like there's a clearer football-side management structure there now. And no fire alarms. So that's my take-away. I'm sure after the Watford game it'll all get back to the usual playbook.
100%. Goals bring confidence and togetherness. A clean sheet is likely to bring 1 point more often than not. I never understand the clean sheet mentality unless we play a team at the top and away from home. We are at home and we need to get good vibes back by having more chances. We really don’t need a flat game right now.
I'd have to disagree what we don't need is having a load of chances scoring 3 but still losing. That's fine if we aren't rooted to the bottom of the league but what we need is points on the board. If we don't concede we can't lose. Once we move up the table a bit then fine but for now let's just not lose
I remember our last eleven match ( or more) run without a win. About this time of the year too. Probably under Dol*n but we couldn't win an argument, never mind a game, and we couldn't score either. The win came at Boothferry Park v Carlise and a young lad we had on loan from Bolton scored the winner in front of the South Stand, late in the second half, in a 1-0 victory. The crowd was down to the 3,000 faithful but the victory felt like winning the FA Cup Final, because many of us seriously thought we would never win another game. Sure someone will google it and pick me up on the details. But I do remember riding home that night on my Honda 50 laughing my head off all the way down Beverley Road.
Peter Taylor, Phil Brown and Steve Bruce were huge on clean sheets and their teams got them and won games. Slutsky, Shota and Walter thought they could outscore teams and not worry about clean sheets. That never worked.
It's about finding a balance at the moment as both areas need drastic improvement. I think a high and intense press would be beneficial providing we don't leave ourselves too exposed at the back - which is completely doable if we're smart about it. Too many times this season we've had one player running around at the top with the rest falling back, albeit too slowly. It's why we get played through far too often. Always chasing shadows out of possession. This in itself should help to reduce goals conceded. Every team we play against has too many moments where they cut through us like a hot knife through butter, even in those games where we control the ball and have the lion's share of possession. I think scoring goals is the bigger problem, purely because I can see it being harder to solve at the moment.
Hope everyone enjoys the next 8 hours or so, this time we have now up until kick off, anything and everything is still possible, come 745 reality will set in and we'll have to deal with whatever comes next, good or bad.....I really fkn hope it's good....
I don’t think it’s any coincidence that Man City’s fall from dominance has come at the same time as Kyle Walker losing all his pace They could play a ridiculously high line as he could beat anyone even when giving them a head start Not anymore
I agreed scoring is always going to hard with this forward line but if you keep a clean sheet then there is always hope they might nick the odd goal. If not you take a point because at the moment we are taking nothing.
I get the theory behind it and why it is being suggested. I just don’t think it will work for our club in this situation. I think our home form and atmosphere is so poor, goals are needed more than anything. Perhaps a more pragmatic approach later down the line.
Thought it might have been Andy Mason? Also sure Dol*n was still the manager so don't think it was the Great Escape season.
On 28th November 1998 we beat Carlisle 1-0 with a goal from Craig Dudley, who we had on loan from Notts County, in front of a crowd of 4,452 (can't see any other 1-0 wins against Carlisle around that time) Think Dolan went in 1997
