...1 point from a possible nine.

To be honest, if anything I think this says more about Manchester United than it does Newcastle.

Chelsea in the second half battered Newcastle today by all accounts, but the first half was a different story. Against City recently, while beaten, Newcastle performed very well and while didn't create as many chances as City, the chances that Newcastle did create were more clear cut. Against United, the overall display was probably the worst out of the three games and yet that was the game that produced the only positive result.

So Chelsea beat Newcastle today. How much can we read into that? That Chelsea have turned the corner for the better and that Newcastle have turned the corner for the worse? I don't think so. What matters now for Newcastle is a positive result in their next game, to ensure that their confidence returns as quickly as possible. I do think that, now that you've dropped out of the top four, you won't be returning to that lofty position again this season, but you have shown so far that you are more than capable of challenging for a Europa league place. And I don't see anything from the other teams in the PL that suggests that they are capable of denying Newcastle a top 7 position come the end of the season.

So the 3 games being the "big test" - well it can hardly be said that Newcastle passed this "test" with flying colours, but then these games won't define your season. And they are 3 tough games that are now out of the way. Dust yourselves down, pick yourselves up, and start again. Finishing in the top 7 is well within your capabilities. At least from what I've seen so far...

'Chelsea in the second half battered Newcastle today by all accounts'

did you actually see the game? Chelsea played much better than newcastle first half, however they should've been down to ten men. Newcastle dominated the early stage of the second half and the latter stages were even, chelsea proving much more clinical. scoring two late goals in the second half (while saylor was off the pitch) does not constitute to dominance.

i agree with your predictions and how highly you rate us though. :)

I didn't see the game - I based my comment on the commentary from the radio, in which it said that Chelsea were slicing Newcastle open at will in the second half.

But it's such a minor point that you've chosen to pick up on. If that wasn't the case, then so be it. It really doesn't matter in terms of my post overall.

We had them on the ropes in the second half until the 2nd goal. It was the first half in which Chelsea had the better of due to our ridiculous formation choice.

Must have been a pretty crap radio station to portray it that way. Maybe they watched the game in reverse by mistake? 1st half they battered us....

Ok, that (rather minor) point has now been put to bed.

Yeah we'll probably drop 3 places by Monday night but there'll be only 2 points between 4th and 7th...
Liverpool are inconsistent this season and have lost one of their best players , Arsenal play Everton, City and Villa in their next 3 games and Chelsea play City and Spurs in their next 3 games ... So for me anything is still mathematically possible but we should now just focus on getting results from our next 3 games ...

Don't want to worry people but we have 6 games in the month and could be playing with Kadar and Perch at centre half this is not good.

Very well balanced article, the ironic thing is these 3 games are not the test but the next 3 games... Any points from any of the top 4 teams are a bonus, especially away from home.. The biggest "test" (even though that term is wrongfully used by the media) I feel is the month of December with a few games against bottom half teams which are the ones we need to win.

No need for that. You're inability to understand my post isn't my problem. Go back, take a deep breath, and at least try and understand the point that is being made. I had hoped that the fact that every time the word "test" was mentioned it was in inverted commas would have been a good enough indicator even for the most simple of minds to understand.

You clearly being the exception. Again, not my problem.
