He was good with Preston too? Much more limited budget, but a 38% win rate with Preston is nothing to sneer at especially considering how long he was there.

I like the idea of Selles but he does seem a bit of a punt and I’m not sure we’re in the right place for another one of those.

Alex Neil might settle us down a bit and get us a mid table finish which we’d all take right now but it does seem a bit of an uninspiring list overall.

I feel like it’s the same everytime we need a manger, we are linked with decent managers then slowly they get less inspiring.
Its like walking into town on a Saturday at 19:30 on the pull with all these expectations of what you think you’ll get…then ending up in tower at 2:00 looking at what’s left

The issue is I can’t see us getting promoted with Neil, he might keep us up but then what? We’d have to sack him eventually.

Just don’t think he’s got it in him, he’s been out of work nearly a full year too.

I’d rather take a risk on Selles if it was between those two.

    But why?

He's done it before, he's shown he has a very good record in the Championship, and at a club with money to spend, does well.

****ing Heckingbottom got Sheff Utd up, it's not as if it takes a particular type or look of manager to do it. Just money and a bit of nous, which Neil has the latter in spades and Acun has the former.

I’m not entirely sure but I just think of awful overly defensive football when I think of him, we already struggle enough attacking so I don’t think he’s the answer to our problems.

Well we have to stop leaking goals to start with?

I don't think he's overly defensive? His Preston side managed 67 goals (ironically their worst finish under him) in one of his three season, and 57 and 59 in the other two I think. Nothing wild, but Preston have never been a particularly thrilling side loaded with attacking talent (the season after he left they only managed 52 goals, for instance).

I think this comes back to my 'oldish and bald' comment, people pigeon hole him into a 'type' of manager.

Seemed strange to begin with as we would have had to get permission to speak to him which would have been more widely documented.

I think people have joined dots between 1904 saying they'd all like Selles, and Baz saying 6 have been interviewed, as well as quoting betting odds. A bit of 2 + 2 = 5 going on.

I think Alex Neil would be a reasonable appointment but I do worry about his Stoke tenor, people saying Stoke were a bit of a mess but I feel like we are tbh. I had a look and they were 16th when he joined and finished in 16th, the following season 17th. We can't afford that type of steady performance, we need a bounce.

I also worry that he's a bit of a counter attack manager and we just don't have the pace, granted it's something that he can fix in the window but doesn't seem ideal to me.

Every manager who has achieved promotion from the championship will have done so at some point for the first time. If we only select managers who have already achieved this at least once, we are restricting our choices unwisely. The trick is to identify a manager who is capable of it and on that journey with the right backing, regardless of previous success. Easier said than done……

And that's a fair shout too, I think for him a lot comes down to the personnel and I don't know him well enough to know how much involvement he likes to have in transfers. He certainly gave Sunderland a bit of a bump though. They'd lost three in a row and he came in and they only lost one more game for the season, winning 8 of their last 11.

I think he's shown he works well with a young, hungry squad which is kind of what we have. Wonder if he could get the best out of someone like Kamara for instance.

It would be a reasonable appointment but I think a point made earlier that he's probably no better than Grant is valid. Acun's been here 3 years and to bring in a similar level manager to Grant would be full circle irony.

Eustace would probably be my preferred choice if possible

How is Norwich, Preston, Sunderland, Stoke on the same level as Peterboro, Doncaster, Hull, Peterboro, Doncaster?

How is a proven championship manager on the same level as someone who got relegated in his only full championship season and is now managing in League 2?

Neil may not be my ideal choice, but he's a completely different profile to McCann.

Why does club size matter? They've both done similar jobs (if you remove the Norwich promotion as it was nearly a decade ago).
