Oh Red Robin, memories are SOO short. Can’t you recall when something similar was launched following the EU referendum to have another vote? I seem to remember you and your fellow Farage-lovers on here telling the likes of me to suck it up because the people have spoken. A second referendum would be ‘anti democratic’ - or words to that effect. Well, this is another ‘suck it up’ moment because the people have spoken again - and again they’ve chosen a ridiculously bad way to go - although the conservative alternative was just as bad except in different ways. Our country is self-destructing fast.
1 in 7 voted Liebour it's hardly a avalanche backing them- Cons+Liebour are no different today time for change
We don’t have PR in this country, the LIB DEMS have been calling for it for Eons, you were happy with our election system whilst it delivered the outcome you wanted. You can’t now moan when it doesn’t.
I am far from a tory supporter these days but 75-80k for a train driver, given without any working practice improvement in return and 22% for (albeit underpaid) doctors who have suggested they will strike again and come back for more is a bit much. Then to say there is £22m black hole more than half of which is to pay for public sector pay rises is taking the country for idiots.
I have worked in the care system the UK has for nearly thirty years. According to Labour the care system needs reform - Social care reform Labour is committed to ensuring everyone lives an independent, prosperous life. Social care is vital to achieving this, but hundreds of thousands of people suffer without the care they need for a dignified life. The sector needs deep reform: there are inconsistent standards, chronic staff shortages, and people are not always treated with the care, dignity and respect they deserve Change Labour Party Manifesto 2024 Labours increase in NIC will damage the care sector, and Labour have already started reneging on their own manifesto. The increase in NIC will take finance out of the care sector. Labour is going to create more staff shortages, more inconsistent standards and people will suffer because of the Labour parties actions. Labours fair pay agreement (in the manifesto), is not costed, is not planned, and there has been no wide consultation = The FPA does not exist, The manifesto in regards to the care sector is a fabrication, it is a litany of lies. Being more **** than the Tories is remarkable.
If they’d have dealt with the public sector pay when they were in power, there wouldn’t have been the need for the present government to have to pick up the pieces. If we want to keep doctors in this country we have to pay the going rate, it’s a global market. I remember in the pandemic when many of us were clapping the health workers, how quickly we forget these things.
That is typical of the Conservative Party. Thy don’t like funding public services because they see it as a cost with no return. Also many of their MPs (not all of course) will have sent their children to private schools and attended them themselves so won’t want to fund a service that they would never consume. Of course there is an indirect financial benefit in having a healthy and well educated population but particularly in the short term it costs a lot of money with no immediate return. Labour will tax everyone to bring the public sector back in line, then the people will get angry and vote Tory at the next election and the whole cycle of 5 years of neglect followed by 5 years of catchup will start over again. It’s how it works in this country I’m afraid.
re read my post I said the Doctors were underpaid. Yes the Tory's wrecked public services but it is the oldest trick in the book to take over a new brief and say you looked under the carpet and things are even worse that could have been imagined, Wake up to what is going on Ashton
It’s also true the Tory’s didn’t deal with the public sector pay, leaving this government having to pick up the pieces. Of course all new governments blame the previous one, but this time that element at least is a genuine issue. Plus of course so many years of underfunding of the public services in general in the name of austerity. It’s all well and good but eventually if you underfund stuff it will eventually bight you on the ass.
I agree the Torys didn't deal with public sector pay when they absolutely should have but I do feel Labour sort of caved in a bit quick and just handed over what was asked for. The claim by Labour that they didn't know the extent of the finances is either not true or incompetent. Equally inept is not realising that the NI raid on employers is a tax on jobs and will hasten the introduction of AI, will reduce employment , hold back growth and increase inflation. If they dont realise this they are truly incompetent. Organisations with high employee numbers and low margins will have to raise prices or reduce heads to maintain margins or even survive. thanks to the NI increase and above inflation increase in the Living wage.
This Country the Country needs to train more Doctors. The Country uses the global market rather than training the number of Doctors the Country needs. In consultation with the British Medical Association, the Government caps the number of training places at UK medical schools. The UK imports foreign-trained doctors to fill the void the capping on training creates. This political choice has gone on for decades and the caps on training numbers started under Labour..
maybe not to short!!! ... the Brexit one was because they lost [ remainers ] and the figures were close..... not that they told a a whole massive pile of lies and deceit ..........! Ashton, the reason it was not given was because it was un affordable and would lead to higher taxation of the masses [ like you and I and all the others on here! ] it would also have an effect on other pay strike deals........ Took labout.gov no time at all with no negotiating to give a deal and the cost was put down to the previous .gov in their £ fictitious 22bn black hole! The tory bit not dealing with and the speed they [ labour ] did dealt with above [ ashton reply ] If you check out the CBI conference where rattlesnake got well and truly trounced again you can see a pattern ... tory .gov tried to keep everything in sync whilst making slow but steady headway [everything they were knocked for pre April 2024 was heading for the best results. ALL THAT RUN OVER of inflation /economy/ interest rates/ etc [ from tory .gov efforts ] ended in October [ 3 monthly arrear effect ] so ... lets see interest was due to come down again in Dec and maybe 3 / 4 times in 2025 inflation due to be below 2% from November/December onward and remain so in 2025 .................. WE WILL SEE.. BTW ....... It was never likely 2 TIER HARMER, even with 3 ,000,000 signatures or more even 5,000,000 would call another election he and the leading 4 or 5 cabinet are egoist narcistic's they feel power they never had before ......................
You still don’t get it. Not agreeing a deal cost more in the long run, than coming to an agreement. Plus we’re never going to sort out the public services with an ongoing dispute. So it’s a double whammy. The reason the costs was put down to the previous government is because it was their inability to sort it out that caused the problem and the cost to put it right. If you buy a car and the engine doesn’t work because it’s never been serviced or maintained, is that your fault or the previous owners? It’s the same principle.
It needed dealing with quickly, the longer it dragged on the more the costs were going to be. It also showed how quickly things can be achieved when both sides want a resolution. Now that’s been agreed the focus can shift to sorting out the public services. Its not new for incoming governments to claim to be surprised by the exact state of the finances, they all do it. There may be an element of politics about the claims, having never been in their position, I have no way of knowing. What seems reasonable is money has to be found somewhere, and whichever way they choose it’s hardly likely to be popular, as the old saying goes you can’t please all the people all of the time. Only time will tell, but I don’t see there was an alternative, to carry on with a government that had left us in the pickle we’re in would have been madness.
Very informative post. I’ve believed for a long time the NHS and the Care system needs a major overhaul. Imo it’s needs to be done cross party. Governments of both colours have failed to address this for far too long. It’s a problem that needs a long term solutions, not one that changes every time a new government is elected.
100% ON THE MONEY-we have people at the very top taking huge salaries with little or no experience in the NHS we have these people who have done a two year crash course and filling voids with little knowledge or experience. My son is in his final year of exams 8 long and hard years -paying for his exams no help from government he will then become a consultant - he is fuming how these governments are steam rolling these inexperienced people into the front line. Many of the foreign doctors and nurses have not gone through the same training and qualifications that are expected here yet are given the go ahead to make vital decisions. Supposedly all having to be checked by a senior.
you really need to read more into the the 3 or 4 fiscal groups interpretations they have all stated that the £22bn is a farcial amount and being so early in a fiscal year just 3 month's in the money in the kitty will show up as being lacking because the majority of it has not been earned, simple to look at your bank account after 3 month's earnings have gone in and wonder how you might pay bills or ....... in the next 3 months' OH of course you are working and you can trim ship to suit over the next 9 month's ... like do overtime... take a £2000 holiday not a £3000 one go to pub for 3 meals less etc if you are silly enough to buy a car that has not been serviced ..or you dont ensure upon purhase its been serviced you get it done ! ???
Shame our public services hadn’t been serviced by the last lot, and there was no warranty either. I’ll try another example for you. Tiles blew off your roof in the recent storm, to save money you could chose not to repair the damage, or you could have a temporary repair done again to save money, but in the hope it would stop water getting in, but only be a fraction of the cost of a proper repair. There are initial savings from both options above, but they both fail to resolve the issue. Which will still need to be addressed at a later date. The first scenario allows water in and when you finally do the full repair there is also going to be internal damage to deal with. The second option again is cheaper initially, but at some time in the future the full repair is going to be needed at a greater cost due to inflation, plus you also have to factor in the cost of the temporary repair. Add to that you may well find once you make the full repair rather than 2 or 3 tiles needing replacing it’s now many more plus there is a high possibility water would have ingressed and caused more damage. As you can see failing to deal with issues, rather than saving money, in the end costs more. So it’s well and good saying we couldn’t afford to make the full repair, but actually we couldn’t afford not too.
