A sensible reply at last, but they alone can’t be seen as being responsible for us not making the play offs which was what the original suggestion was. Philogene and Tufan both missing penalties against Watford home and away were both pivotal, especially the latter. Most of the team made mistakes during the season which ultimately cost points, to suggest as the original post did that Allsop conceded “many soft goals” that cost us a play off place is plain wrong.
It's not utter bollox, it's true! Allsop was absolutely brilliant with his feet, but when it came to shot stopping and positioning he was absolutely horrendous and utterly terrible. The stats at the end of the season re keepers backed it up.
Allsop wasn’t very good at stopping shots close to his body. It was his Achilles heel. It’s not Pandur’s fault we’re ****. Overall he’s a good keeper. But it remains true that Allsop was a better distributor by some margin, and he probably helped our overall play more than he hindered it. The fact there was this bust-up over keepers with Acun and Rosie illustrates one of our biggest problems. Acun wanted us as his toy. To do it his way, with his players, not the manager’s way. Therefore (wrongly) McCann had to go. Therefore (wrongly) Rosie had to go. In both cases, what we got instead is far, far worse. First time, he acted quickly enough. This time, he hasn’t. Acun has done a lot of positive things. But his legacy will be a sour one unless he gets in a proper manager - eg Robins - and lets him manage how he wants. Maybe he’s waiting for Mowbray after Christmas.
So which of the “many soft goals” did he concede that were ultimately responsible for lost points that specifically cost us promotion? He wasn’t a great keeper, but the original post suggested he was the player responsible for us not being in the play offs.
I would say he was the player who had the most big mistakes last season, meaning missing sitters, missing penalties, giving away penalties, getting sent off, giving away daft easy chances or goals etc. I’m sure you could go and watch all the highlights and see exactly which soft goals actually caused lost points if you’re that interested. It happened, and just because posters can’t reel individual instances off from memory doesn’t mean it didn’t.
I'm not sad enough to keep things like that stored in my head or to hand just incase someone asks for them on a forum, but I trust my memory and my assessment of goalkeepers. The same as I know we'd probably be bottom of the league right now if pandur hadn't been in the form he has so far this season, yes he's not on allsops level re long range distribution, but he absolutely batters him in absolutely every other department GK wise. We didn't end up in the play offs because we had a manger who was way to cautious, way to negative and would rather make sure we didn't lose then make sure we won. But last season means nothing now and has no bearing on this season
If it was that obvious you’d be able to offer some examples. He let in a soft goal at home to Watford which cost us the game, although Philogene had already missed a penalty that might have won us the game. He conceded a soft goal away at Coventry, but we won the game. The suggestion was that him conceding soft goals was THE reason we didn’t make the play offs.
So if he hadn't let in that soft goal Vs Watford, what points would we have finished on and GD? From memory we'd been level with Norwich wouldn't we? But I can't remember GD.... So that soft goal could just have cost us a play off place?
I wouldn’t necessarily argue with any of your points, Pandur is by far the better keeper overall, but blaming Allsop in the way that the OP did is wrong.
West Brom home, which I personally disagree, but the analyst in 5 live with his coaching badges said Allsop’s position was wrong and it should have been an easy routine save. Theres 2 points.
I would add to that- Middlesbrough at home -soft goal at near post cost us 2 points Coventry at home - soft goal at near post cost us 2 points Stoke at home - soft goal at home cost us a point Blackburn at home - soft goal at near post -we got away with a lucky 3-2 win
Now you say it, remember that Boro goal. Didn’t he **** up twice in that match? And then pull off an absolute worldy right at the death to save us the point.
You could tell in pre season it wasn't going to work. I thought the 'give him time' argument was baseless nonsense with nothing other than a hope it was going to work. You can tell within a month whether a manager is going to be a success, clearly you don't expect the finished product or anywhere close but you can get a good perception and you want to see signs of progress. You can blame the poor recruitment but the XI that played the majority of pre season weren't anywhere near as poor as people were making out and we've had worse sides at this level. It's was clear that TW isn't up to it in pre-season as it was that Matty Jacob wasn't either, and I made that point at the time.
Yes it could, but the OP said “many soft goals conceded that cost us points”. He definitely conceded some soft goals but they didn’t always cost us points and there were plenty of errors from other players that cost us points. All I asked is for him to provide some facts to back up his statement.
Yeah, let’s be fair. Regardless of luck or stats we’re massively struggling. It’s not going to get better under Walter. Time to cut our losses
West Brom at home, we conceded a corner when Morton needlessly miskicked a clearance and then Philogene lost his man at the corner. Philogene also lost his man at corners against Swansea and Stoke but of course that’s Allsopp fault too.
The guy on 5 live has his coaching badges so his opinion goes until someone with higher level badges says otherwise. That’s 2 points for your list.
I’ve never said he didn’t concede some goals that might have been saved by someone better, nor did I say he didn’t concede any goals that cost us points. Most of the players made mistakes that ultimately cost us points, it happens in football. Look again at the statement in the OP.
It's not even about "We told you so." It's more about just been passive and calling us "bed wetters" when we could clearly see in pre season and especially the cup game that Walter's style nase no ****ing sense and the players had no clue what they were doing. Atleast Walter finally learned your keeper shouldn't wait at the half way line... It took him 6 games but, he got there...
