The computer works but won’t connect to the internet? This won’t solve your problem it might tell you if the connection is there but the computer’s not working or there’s no connection at all. To run the ping command in Windows, follow these steps: Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog. Type "cmd" and hit Enter. In the Command Prompt, type "ping" followed by the URL or IP address you want to ping, and hit Enter So you might type “ping BBC.co.uk”
Sorry just to explain what it does. Think of a WW2 movie. British destroyer, gathered around the ASDIC listening to the pings coming back from the German submarine. The Cruel Sea. It sends a ping across the internet and measures how long it takes to come back. It’ll either give you a time in milliseconds if the connection is there or a failure if it isn’t.
Thanks for that notDistant.....but a saviour came from Durham Uni this afternoon......my youngest grandson ..... he has popped down from Durham because he has an internship interview up the city on Monday for a summer job next year.....and he popped in with dad to say hello....(well I couldn't allow such an opportunity to pass me by could I ). I don't know what he did but he linked my computer up with his mobile and solved varies problems and as you can see I'm back online again....I honestly don't know where he got his brains from.....his pass marks to get to Uni where high...so he had no trouble getting on their maths degree course. One of the problems is my computer is Windows 10.....and it isn't compatable with Windows 11 updates....so there is no updating going on for my computer regarding certain things like my google browser....it keeps telling me to update but it refuses to.....so I have to keep loading the browser as a new edition. But thanks notDistant for trying to help me.....I'll keep it in mind for when it happens again. PS.......my computer is 8yrs old in January...is that old or not ?.
Eight years is a long time in the tech industry! Mine’s nearly 4 years old: I usually change every 3 years. It was a fairly high spec at the time but I think it’s probably one of the oldest capable of running Windows 11. I have upgraded to that from Windows 10. New one next year! The new Nvidia graphics card should be out soon……. Hopefully it won’t be as expensive as cards were during the Great Chip Famine of a couple of years back!
Computer working well this morning.. Had a Driver updating to do....so let AVG do the necessary successfully .....but low and behold the computer wouldn't go back online afterwards ....so back to square one again......I was considering if it was time to upgrade after 8 yrs.....it has done well. ....
I've tried your suggestion but all I get is..... ..is not recognised as an internal or external command........so thanks anyway.
Umm you need to find the command prompt first. I can’t remember how Windows 10 does it. I’ll have a look at my machine tomorrow. In any event, it’s not going to solve your problem but might indicate if the problem is your computer or your internet connection. Have you rebooted your router? Are you connected to it by cable or WiFi?
It seems that updating an out of date Driver caused the problem originally....so repeating it again has got the same result. My grandson realised that...but failed to tell me ......doh .
Ah yes. The only driver updates I do are from Microsoft itself or direct from the manufacturers of odd bits of kit I have attached (e.g. keyboard and mouse, speakers etc). You have to be careful - my security software is always offering me driver updates and they may have a point from a security point of view but I don't trust a middle-man.
My son has just popped in with the instruction that my Grandson has passed on to him....to get me back online.....bingo. He has sent the info to my phone now...incase I need it again.

Seems like premature extrapolation with the current round not even started, but the round after this current one starts on Tuesday at 8pm, so here's the match text: Burnley - Coventry City Hull City - Sheffield Wednesday Norwich City - Plymouth Argyle Sheffield United - Oxford United Stoke City - Preston North End Watford - Bristol City Sunderland - West Bromwich Albion Cardiff City - Queens Park Rangers Leeds United - Luton Town Middlesbrough - Blackburn Rovers Portsmouth - Millwall Derby County - Swansea City It's been a bit difficult to decide on a Super Match, so Hull v Sheffield Wednesday will have to do.

REVISED SCHEDULES INCLUDING MUSTY Commentary is not consistent with the facts - so no change there. Nothing from Musty as far as I can see as at 1pm Friday. Apparently a Watford player has travelled down from an airport by taxi having arrived back from international duty late yesterday. What a nonsense this Nations League thing is. We have unanimity over wins for Sheffield United, Blackburn and West Brom. Plym is the only dissenter on a win for Middlesbrough at Oxford. That is a tough one to call and I'm surprised there isn't more variety in the opinions. Blackburn to beat Portsmouth is the favourite Joker, probably understandable: Portsmouth have only taken 4 points from their last 6 away games but Blackburn have had a bit of a stutter at home recently: DWL in their last 3. I've gone a bit bonkers by putting my joker on Argyle but it's the match with the biggest points differential in recent home versus away form: we've taken 13 points from our last 6 homes whilst they've taken a miserable 3 points from their last 6 aways. What could possibly go wrong?
