When you look at the millions if not billions of dollars that poured into the Democrats after Harris got the nomination and their sweeping campaign publicity they really thought it was in the bag. Trump kept it simple and got the message across, sometimes less is more. The last three elections have shown the quality of candidates to be abysmal the Americans deserve better...
Biden caused this debacle If he hadn't tried to hang on then the Democrats could have chosen a new broom to stand in the election...who could have fought Trump with a much cleaner playbook. Biden hung around far too long...and when he went/ forced out... it could only be Harris who replaced him...and she was tarred with Bidens policies She was also a black woman...exactly the sort of politician the MAGA tribe love to hate
You'd think faced with Trump the Democrats would have made Biden an offer he couldn't refuse as he was clearly an embarrassment way before the decision needed to be made. I think the political witch hunt trying to disqualify Trump backfired spectacularly, every try gave him an increase in the polls. Politics is a dirty business and Trump milked it very cleverly...
I had hoped this win would bring some lapsed posters back but alas no. Hope they’re choosing not to post rather than unable to, wherever they are in this life or the next. Ellers is fine btw. Saw him a month or two ago. He’s lost weight in fact. Looking better than a decade ago if anything.
So, for the lack of anywhere else to turn, the UK could soon find itself in a 'Special Relationship' with a fascist dictatorship. Time to reverse the nonsense of Brexit. That ought to do it, Watford.
I think that you are spot on Beth. Harris, as well as being tarred with Biden’s record, was seemingly widely regarded as a ‘less than exceptional’ VP. The Democrats would have been better served by adopting the likes of Newsome, Buttigieg, Shapiro or Whitmer as their candidate.
Breaking a rule to watch Channel 4 News, to see the hand wringing, gnashing and wailing at the Presidential Election result. First five minutes all about Kamala Harris….
I'm watching CNN, the sheer incomprehensibility of their anchors and guests to Trumps win makes for great viewing ETA I can't bring myself to watch Fox News, it's the twilight zone on there
Just heard a democrat grandee interviewed who said given her level of experience and level of talent she did well. Talk about damning with faint praise.
I read somewhere today that only 61% of eligible US voters exercised their right - a lot of apathy out there to mainstream politics
Like here the voting system must affect it a lot. Not many swing states. Would be interested to see it by state.
139 million votes for the main two out of 161 million dosent seem too apathetic As of 2022, out of a voting eligible population of around 240 million, there were 161.42 million registered voters in the United States - that's around 3.5 times the number of registered voters in the UK. When registering to vote, most US voters also register with one of the main political parties, so they can take in primary elections to decide on the party leader. Some register as independent, or unafilliated - and, of course, those are the voters the candidates want to reach the most.
I'm registered as Independent because I don't fully align myself with the politics of either main party here. Given the choice between Der Fuhrer or Hippy Girl, I'm always going to go with an individual's right to decide how they want to live as opposed to government-imposed morals. One of the things I talked about with friends and neighbors over the last month was that the Republicans want to turn the States into the kind of place(s) the Founding Fathers (and Mothers) fled...
The US, and NY in particular, has always been one of my favourite places to visit. I don't think I'm inclined to come again.
