I thought the funniest one was No.20 on the 'Hot Tip For The Top' list, a band that didn't even exist yet.
The vote in our car load gave Spear shading it on the night. Jobson great front man as always, but thought they were better last time we saw them with Big Country's Bruce Watson & son on guitars
I agree In fact said nearly exactly the same to someone on the way out To be honest I prefer Spear’s songs anyway. Always been a sucker for a hint of brass in the mix. Jobson was entertaining though (even though I find his completely out of time dancing off putting )
Into the Valley was a great song, but I never really liked The Skids. Jobson's out of time dancing was annoying at Hull Uni in '79 and it sounds like it's just as annoying now. I seem to remember the highlight of that Hull Uni gig, was someone setting fire to the curtains. Or was that The Dickies? Theatre of Hate were rarely off my Walkman back in the day, not least because Westworld was produced by my hero Mick Jones.
I was never a huge fan of the skids either, saw them a few times live though when they were relatively unknown and they were half decent .Stuart Adamson was a phenomenal guitarist who sadly passed away far too young...
Saw the skids at cott civic hall just before covid I think Johnson’s just a cock isn’t he One of those people who just grates on you he’s the type who probably walks round shops talking loudly about nothing on his phone
Wasn’t it Adam and the Ants when the curtains were set fire? Very inconvenient as I was trying to sneak in through a window at the time! EDIT - Maybe with @Ron Burguvdy too?
Agree, his guitar style in both The Skids and Big Country was unique - the nearest that comes to it in my opinion is Bruce Watson from Big Country, who had the benefit of playing alongside Adamson, and when he's guested for the Skids their old songs sound pretty much how they used to with Adamson........something that I felt was missing last night. Jobson pays tribute to Stuart Adamson every Skids gig - but it seriously pisses him off that Big Country had greater chart success than the Skids
Yes...that was the gig at Hull College, Queens Gardens....i think the gig Olm is talking about is the Damned gig at Hull University that also had the curtains lit on fire, seemed to be a thing back then and the Damned gigs were always liable to be a tad lively.
Just got tickets to see Tony Christie at wrecking ball next year don’t know why I’m telling you lot I don’t want any riff raff turning up there
