Wilshere now confirmed: "Norwich City have confirmed the appointment of former Arsenal and England international Jack Wilshere as their new first-team coach. Wilshere, 32, has moved to Carrow Road from his role as the Gunners under-18 manager and joins Johannes Hoff Thorup's coaching staff ahead of their next Championship encounter against Middlesbrough on Sunday. Compensation has been paid to Arsenal, and Wilshere will begin work with City's squad on Thursday." https://c.newsnow.co.uk/A/1248851907?-11057:808:nn_topic_latest#out
It seems to strike a good balance in the coaching staff, with Riddersholm bringing years of experience and Wilshere a recent playing career at the highest level and an immediate impact in his coaching work with young players at Arsenal.
We need to get his signature on a contract extension though. Just 20 months left I believe, not very long at all.
We had a similar dilemma with Emi a few years back. We managed to keep him thru a few transfer windows before the inevitable happened. Hopefully the sale of Sara, Idah and Rowe will mean only a ridiculous offer will be entertained in the short term. Pukki was a magnificent free transfer. It's looking like we may have nailed another one with dramatically higher sell-on potential.
Norwich City players with expriring contracts in 2025 Player Year Signed Extension Option Angus Gunn 2021 No Christian Fassnacht 2023 Yes Emilaino Marcondes 2024 Yes Jacob Sorensen 2020 Yes Grant Hanley 2017 No Onel Hernandez 2018 Yes Ashley Barnes 2023 Yes Tony Springett 2014 No Jonathan Tomkinson 2019 Yes Jaden Warner 2014 No Archie Mair 2019 Yes
Let go: Angus Gunn* Christian Fassnacht Grant Hanley -- with testimonial Ashley Barnes Tony Springett Jonathan Tomkinson Archie Mair Jaden Warner New contract: Emiliano Marcondes Extend: Jacob Sorensen Onel Hernandez *Longer term we need someone better, and I don't think we should commit to a lengthy, expensive contract to keep him. If Angus would accept a further two years on a manageable wage, then OK.
According to TransferMarkt the contract expires in 2025, so 2026 would be via an option to extend. I think Fassnacht will return to Young Boys in January and we'll look for a younger option at WR.
I'd agree with all of that except Gunn. I think we would struggle to find anyone better at this level and love that he is a Norwich fan as well. If we were promoted then I would maybe agree. I don't know what kind of wages he is on though, as you suggest they may not be manageable after joining us from the PL.
Suspect Hanley won't get a testimonial, even though he perhaps deserves it. Tettey didn't get one after 9 years, and he made 19 championship appearances in his final season, compared to just 3 for Hanley so far in his 8th year.
Let go: Christian Fassnacht - 31 next season, getting injuries won't help his fitness, pace or form Onel Hernandez - he'll be 32 next season we can do better in that position, again injuries are affecting him Jacob Sorensen - much like above re. injuries, can only see him as 3rd choice LB Grant Hanley -- with testimonial, agreed RBB Ashley Barnes Tony Springett Jonathan Tomkinson Archie Mair Jaden Warner New contract: Emiliano Marcondes - assuming he wishes to stay Extend: Angus Gunn - not adverse to seeing him leave (Loris Karius is currently available for free!). If a club offered £5-7m in January I'd take it. That said GL isn't good enough as backup for a team aiming for promotion so would need to spend that money immediately. So perhaps better to wait until July/August to sell.
Am I alone in finding it strange that we have got to November without some sort of resolution of Gunn's future?
Maybe I’m imagining things, but haven’t we quite frequently announced contract extensions in December/Jan? I think there is a logic to it, because that’s basically the last opportunity for an alternative solution (other than letting the contract expire), so if either side has been holding out on a point but needs to move that’s when it happens.
