Rollercoaster You do know Rollercoasters go up and down, you’ve not won a game yet. Lucky you never conceded 6 today
Fortune just not on our side this season. But we can't be conceding 4 every other game and expect to come away with points. Need a stable defensive partnership and time to let the relationship build, sounds like their not operating as a unit. Result not a surprise but I fear the way the match went will be a bigger hammer blow to confidence than being hammered by City, west ham etc al
Frustrating, still early days just because progress over the last two seasons was quicker than anyone could imagine don’t **** yourselves when things inevitably slow up or even appear to stall, believe in the process.
I'd take more positives from the fact we can go away from home, score three and come a whisker away from getting a fourth.
Tbh Mike, we didn't have much luck today, that and zero help from the referee, who belongs in league 1. Muric should have been dropped after about the 4th game, honestly don't see what KM sees in him. Biggest problem is the injuries to Greaves and Tuenzebe, our backups are ****!!
Frustratingly entertaining game. A strong first 40 minutes with some ruthless attacking. Brentford seemed to click and suss us out, scored two quick fire goals and dominated us for most - if not all - the second half. Sending off from Clarke was debatable (the penalty was not). Poor goalkeeping and atrocious defending for this level. We look better going forward. Still not convinced by Phillips. We are missing Tuanzebe and Greaves at the back - no debate there to be had, surely? Morsy’s bite in midfield was missed too. Selection headache in attack - maybe just a coincidence, but as soon as Ogbene was stretchered off and Burns came on, the entire performance worsened. We need to sort the defence out, but at least there are solutions up front.
Problem is, we are going to win very few games conceding a minimum of 2 goals. I love the attacking football we play but the personnel in the defence are not good enough ( I know we’re playing with back ups at present ). Starts with the keeper who I don’t think the rest of the defence have any confidence in - must be time to at least try Walton, he’s not great with his feet but he knows that as well as anyone. If we don’t beat Leicester’s I think that’s it for our season
Entertaining game but again too many poor mistakes. We looked far better in Brentfords half and up until the goals weren't too bad defensively. On the ball we're not good enough passing it out from the back to beat the press, which is bizarre considering how good we were last season at it infact we look awful at it currently. Muric makes saves he's not expected to and then makes mistakes he's not expected to. Id get Walton back in. Clarke not good enough defensively for league 1, so not a chance in this league, although he was unlucky to give away a penalty and get sent off...really harsh decisions. Hopefully Tuanzebe back in the team soon, if he played today we'd have won. O'Shea meh, meant to be one of the fastest players in the division, slow in the head to me. Get Woolfenden back in, done barely anything wrong this season. Burgess and Davis I don't think did too much wrong to be fair. Let's get the old guard back together. Phillips and Cajuste were okay, in moments showed some real quality but not dominant enough infront of the defence both on and off the ball. They played better in Brentfords half than our own. Phillips looks better in Morsy's position and started to take some responsibility but still needs to take more and try to dominate midfield. Cajuste showed some good moments and covered the left side alot better than Phillips did but obviously ran out of steam. Ogbene.. looks like a bad injury but haven't seen anything of him so far which impresses. Again he's meant to be lightening fast but haven't seen it yet. Burns as ever some good, some not so good but he's always a presence. Chaplin along with Hirst made a huge difference. Forget the goal Hirst brings out the best of others and him and Chaplin have a great connection. Szmodics, well taken goal and worked hard, with Hirst uptop he looks a far more handy coming in from the left. And Delap, whilst I'd prefer to see Hirst in the team, there's no one better to come on when you've got 10 men. He can score goals out of nothing and hopeful balls, so will be crucial this season but doesn't bring the same out of others as Hirst does. If we bring in another striker maybe we could see Hirst and Delap in the same team.
I'm not saying Greaves won't be the first choice in the future but I don't think Burgess has let us down the past 2 games, great with his head and not made any obvious mistakes. Greaves like Muric has made some outstanding tackles/blocks but he also has made a poor mistakes and positionally needs some work as he gets too tight and pulled out of position too easily...because Burgess is slow positionally he's had to develop a better understanding. I'm not saying I feel strongly either way but currently there's not much between the 2 at CB both have their strengths and weaknesses. I'd also say by the letter of the law it wasn't a penalty...ref gave a freekick and for me that wasn't a clear and obvious error, so again incorrect use of VAR for me. If Tuanzebe played today we wouldn't have lost.
Disagree on Burgess - partly at fault for a couple of goals today and didn’t look that solid against Everton. For me, Greaves definitely deserves to start ahead of him based on performances this season. Burgess is fine in the air, but struggles massively when the ball is on the ground. Not fast or sharp enough at this level. I think it was a penalty. Some grappling outside the area, but main contact for the player to go down happened in the box. Penalty for me, but watching the goal back - was there an issue over whether Brentford’s free kick leading to it was taken properly? Second yellow card was not a booking, not even a foul. Agreed if Tuanzebe was starting, we’d have won it. Also, if Szmodics had buried that chance in the area to go 3-0 up, we’d have won it. Shoulda, coulda, woulda though.
I think people are harsh with Waltons ability with his feet, from what I've seen he's better than Muric. I doubt it'll happen but I'd put him back in, brings more confidence to the defence, good decision making and a good presence.
Wouldn't disagree too much in regards to it being given as a penalty but what I disagree with is that VAR overturned the original decision because for me it wasn't clear and obvious.
Defensively, whilst we may argue about personnel, I also think tactically we need to be a bit tighter as a unit, it's too easy for teams to get in behind
The goals we are giving away have little to do with our attacking play. We aren’t doing the basics of defending for the whole 90 minutes.
