https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cy78r6vp263o Decent short article on the beeb. This bit sums it up for me: Southampton and Martin are repeating their failings while expecting different results. It is not happening, with pressure now increasing on the manager alongside the possibility they could become marooned at the bottom.
Checks news. Not sacked. Poor from SR. Sack him today, Lallana as caretaker until replacement in. I'm so pleased I was out all day yday, although following on the BBC scores wasn't pleasant.
Unfortunately I think he will remain for now They better order some more buses for him to throw the players under when looking to blame anyone but himself.
Out of interest does anyone give us any chance of survival now? I think we're basically relegated already and would take an unbelievable turnaround to run it close even. We'd have to get 6 points from Everton and Wolves to stay even remotely in touch looking at the fixtures. The 5 games after those two include Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs at home and away trips to Villa and Brighton
I think he should have gone at the start of the intl break, didn’t think we’d beat Leicester with him in charge. Still think it is possible, even if to get a half decent style of play ready for the Championship next season. I’d be doing all I can to give Dibling a huge contract offer too. Think we will take some points off the bigger teams also, Chelsea and Spurs. One of them will fall.
With Russell at the helm, not a chance of staying up, tactically inept. As it stands we will even beat Derby’s record.
He needs to go today. The longer you leave it the less attractive the managers job becomes. If the club lets this slide suddenly we’ll be 12-13 games in, on 1 point so a new manager would basically be coming in getting ready for the championship, in which case you may as well stay with RM as the calibre of replacements will be piss poor.
If Martin goes in the next couple of days/weeks and we are in the Championship next year whoever his replacement is won’t be the manager then. That’s a minimum of 28 games they would’ve been in charge of, which I’m sure would he deemed enough to keep us up, and they would’ve failed to do so. It’s why I can’t see someone like Corberan being interested. We are 99.9% relegated, there’s no 2 ways about it. This team needs to get to 36 points or whatever and we have already had some of the easiest fixtures. A good upcoming manager should see this as only negatively effecting their career as it would be “oh they had loads of time to keep them up but didn’t” type reaction to them coming if they failed to keep us up. We will be attractive in the summer as one of the strongest sides in the Champ again, but right now not so much
Yeah I can see it this way also, which is why it is extra frustrating the SR have left it this long. I get that 8 games isnt long, but it was considering how we were playing, the subs, and the results. I can see your situation being correct, which is why letting him have this game shows they leant nothing from the last time in the EPL. That said, someone could come in and we could get 10 points from the first five games. Or maybe 15 from ten games. Looks different then. It was painfully obvious in the summer this would likely happen. I can’t stand the manager, too arrogant and full of his own self promotion playing this way and talking the bollocks he does. No one in their right mind would double down like he has. If he didn’t have nice hair and was abrasive in the sense that Jones was, people would dislike him just as much. I don’t think he is that different from Jones, ability wise.
My Ideal manager would be someone who is a great tactician with Russells man management skills. Is there anyone out there who fits that description?
Technically it is possible because of the number of games left, but it already feels extremely steep.
Like I say really we would need to beat both Everton and Wolves. If we don't then we'll likely still be on single digit points come Christmas day.
Aren't Everton playing pretty well currently? Who would you prefer to come in and replace Martin? Any suggestions?
I said last year that promotion would be really bad, and that we should stay in the Championship. I was shot down in flames. I would venture to suggest that I am being proved right...
Survival was problematic at the start of the season and l think it is now highly improbable. Replacing Martin with someone sufficiently competent to overcome this deficient is remote and, in any case, the squad is mentally so fragile even Pep would struggle to turn us around. The only question on my mind is whether we fail to beat Derby for the lowest number of points for a relegated team. Like relegation, there is a high potential this could happen. Martin should be replaced sooner than later, he has shown he cannot manage at this level. He seems a decent bloke and is probably competent at lower leagues, but is currently out of his depth. The squad is not that bad. it just needs someone to stabilse us and enhance what we have. Ideally to rebuild us for a more stable future.
Four unbeaten in the league. And no idea tbh, I don't watch enough football outside of Saints to know much about other managers really. Preferably anyone who isn't a philosophy manager and can play in more than one way though. Potter would be a coup if he would come but worry the football would be rather dull and we wouldn't score many goals.
