Hayden Hackney and Chris Rigg nominated for Goal of the Month please log in to view this image https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/24645486.hayden-hackney-chris-rigg-nominated-goal-month/ NORTH-EAST midfielders Hayden Hackney and Chris Rigg are involved in a head-to-head battle for the Championship Goal of the Month award for September. Middlesbrough’s Hackney has been nominated for his strike in his side’s 2-0 home win over Stoke City. Accelerating onto a ball that his team’s pressing had won back high up the field, Hackney drove forward, stepped inside a challenge and found the top corner with a precise long-range finish. Sunderland’s Rigg has also made the four-man award shortlist for his match-winning strike in the Black Cats’ 1-0 Wear-Tees derby win over Boro. The teenager looked to have taken the ball too wide as he attempted to round Seny Dieng in the Boro goal, but he found the net with a remarkable back-heeled strike to claim the only goal of the game at the Stadium of Light. Sheffield Wednesday’s Barry Bannan and Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer are the other two players to be shortlisted, with the former selected for a swivelled strike against QPR and the latter nominated for a direct free-kick against Derby County. Fans can vote for their favourite goal on EFL.com before 5pm on Monday, October 14, with supporters’ votes being combined with the choices of a panel comprised of Sky Sports EFL experts Don Goodman and David Prutton to determine the winner. https://www.efl.com/news/2024/october/11/cast-your-vote-for-september-s-sky-bet-goal-of-the-month/
The Hackney goal is good but has been scored a thousand times before ... ... Rigg's goal would've been outstanding if Salah had scored it when Liverpool were already 4-0 up in the last few minutes. This was a 17yo kid playing in a local derby, at 0-0, in front of 40,000 people and millions on live TV. Anyone who votes for Hackney needs a taxi calling Definitions hackneyed adjective Overused; unoriginal and trite. Made commonplace.
Riggs is that instinct of a special players. Have to say I think Bannans is some technique and 99% of the time they go anywhere but on target. I could see him winning it. Voted for Rigg though.
He deserves it for the way he stuck with Sheff Wed after they were relegated because he could easily play at higher level but he wanted to put it right and get them promoted. **** me I only watch matches that Sunderland play in and the odd England match and I heard sky commentators say the above numerous times! And don't get me started in how often they shoot their load when he gets near the ball! They are always on the edge of climax thinking he is suddenly going to do something amazing!
It is a funny thing how us fans latch onto things. Bannan is a very good player. But he is a figure of fun for opposing fans. Derby fans round here say the same about him. Commentators do cotton onto players. Arguably a result of watching highlights not full games. I believe we are starting to see it with Rigg and Jobe. There is a focus on them from commentators, which at the minute is less about football achievements than it is about potential or their story. We had the same in league 1 with McGeady because of his background.
I think the problem with Bannan is that after 20 years in football he's never made it anywhere, couldn't hack the PL, won nothing in the lower leagues and failed with Scotland. I think he's only scored around 40 goals for his various clubs and never scored for his national side. He has talent, no denying that, but I think it's probably his slightly arrogant 'little big man' attitude that invites people to take the mickey ... ... and, of course, the commentators build him up because there's little else about the club they can use.
Between Hackney and Rigg for me, tbh if the teams were reversed I'd probably vote for the former it was a great run and finish. So was Rigg's but the setup wasn't clean if you're nitpicking. Tough backheel, the ball was moving away from the goal at pace and the angle was tight. I did vote for Rigg but there wasn't a clear winner.
Bannan - completely unmarked. Easy goal that my dead dog could’ve scored Hamer - set piece. Sometimes they go in other times they don’t. This one did. Two inches can mean a lot to a bloke. Hackney - poor defending that allowed him to run into space. Lucky strike that happened to go in. Rigg - an absolute peach of a goal. He got the ball when surrounded by a load of mutants. He was able, through sublime football skill to dodge every bit of flack they threw at him. Then, just to tease them a bit more he made them think that he’d taken the ball too far knowing full well that he was going to back heel the ball into the goal. He should be given goal of the century not of the month.
