Style of play is one thing but quality of players shouldn't be overlooked.

Greaves not replaced (Hughes? Div 1 player who can't get on the pitch)

Millar? Ok but no Philogene though.

    Bedia? no Delap.

Seri? Didn't matter who replaces him. We've essentially made the position redundant.

Tufan? Mehlem's not in his league.

Morton? Carvalho? I could go on. The new late signings haven't stepped up yet.

Looking at Hamburg’s squad, the most crucial players for Walter’s style of play seemed to be Meffert, Schonlau, Glatzel and Reis. We should’ve made a proper effort to sign at least the first three.

Cody Drameh was for me our best player by a long way, then Slater...Have to start with them from the get-go. Hughes has surely got to come in shortly, because the defence look like conceding. Macca looks like he's treading water from min one. Burns will be a better centre back then midfielder. Omur doesn't look like the same player from last season, but he was playing alongside Carvalho and had the likes of Delap for company. Still think Omur has got to start because there is no one else with his creativity...As for the rest, no idea.

Does Walter have much experience with players from outside Germany?

He’s only ever coached in Germany before us. Seems to have signed a fair few decent players from Slavic countries like Slovakia, Croatia etc.

Meffert and Schonlau are adept at Walter’s build-up with the ‘pass and move’ rotations. He signed them both for Hamburg in 2021 and he worked with Meffert at Holstein Kiel before that. They’re also leaders on the pitch. We were trying to sign Liam Cooper in addition to Hughes when I think we should’ve tried to sign Schonlau instead.

    Agreed...

Sheff Utd out-thought and out-muscled us when they needed to,they've got the players to do that and they're not slow at punishing silly errors.Their defence looked fairly solid to me and they've got players willing to put their body on the line to grab and bully their way to 3 points.

They were streetwise,a typical blades outfit with the required amount of muscle.

If they're $hite then I'm not sure where that leaves us in the pecking order...

That is exactly how Sheff U got promoted from the Championship last time. Then they stunk the Premier League out.

If you look back to 12 months ago, Philogene's best output was worse than Millar's last season. Delap came off the back of 2 poor loans. Morton had a solid spell at Blackburn but we had a manager who was very good at developing young players and pretty quickly. Players seemed to get up to speed almost immediately, none of this bullshit of we need time. Morton & Philogene were both DD signings but seemed to become important players overnight.

It's what made the LR sacking decision completely ****ing moronic. Ignore all the style, the finishing position etc, he developed young players fantastically which if we'd have had a greater reliance on permanent players would've made us staggering money. As an reasonable owner, you'd think that would be a dream. If you keep reinvesting and keep developing we could've used it as a way to bridge the gap between the Parachute clubs and give us a proper tilt at promotion in the next 2-3 years.

Leeds sold players in the summer for more than £100m, it's far from unrealistic that we could've had that level of value in our squad in the next few years. If you then don't think LR is the man to take you up, sack him and bring someone in who is. But now we're basically back to square 1.

We have just had an international break and people seemed to think that not playing competitive football was the problem
On a different tac, all these international breaks and extra matches is ruining footbaall

I just think it’ll be good for him to have more time getting his ideas across but yeah I agree it’s a pain with it stop starting every few weeks this early on

The current side is significantly better than the one LR came into. But hey, short memories....

Because you'd have to be stupid to think this side is better than our current one.

    One match
    No Coyle
    Woods playing
Surely there were better players available
Why can you say the players we have now are better? What's so good about them?

They are. An international break every five or six Championship games is ****ing crap. Three international breaks between summer and Christmas is stupid. The UEFA Nations League is a joke and ruining the domestic calendar.

Jones, McLoughlin, Coyle and Slater to name a few are also ‘2nd rate jobbers’. At least the ‘2nd rate jobbers’ at Hamburg have experience playing his style of football.
