There's something wrong when the likes of Spurs and Arsenal view finishing in the top four as a measure of success this (and most other) season, rather than winning silverware.

Spurs could realistically win the EUROPA League or Carling Cup, yet put weak sides out in each so they can concentrate on finishing 4th in the PL. Subsequently they are out of the Carling Cup and on the verge of a EUROPA League exit.

Arsenal could have won the Carling Cup but put out a weakened side v Man City and got knocked out. They too would rather finish fourth than win silverware. Surprising given their lack of silverware in the past five or six years.

It's a sad state of affairs when teams would rather finish 4th in the league than have cup success. If I was a Spurs fan :)emoticon-0119-puke:) and had the choice of finishing fourth in the PL, or winning the EUROPA League and Carling Cup I'd take the silverware all day long. Yet most are no doubt not bothered as it increases their chances of a 4th place finish.

I know it all boils down to money at the end of the day but success used to be measured on trophies, not who can finish fourth yet win nothing. Now I don't for one second think we'll be in the top four at the end of the season, but if I was offered a cup win and a 7th place league finish, or no silverware and a 4th place finish I know which one I'd pick.

The problem is i'm pretty sure you get less money for winning the Europa League than you do for just qualifying from the CL group stages, plus the fact the EL is like an additional 19 games on your season.

  4. We'll get raped in the CL mate.

We've got a great first team, one that could be called a top 6 team IMO, but we don't have a top 6 squad.

We've got very little outside our strongest 12/13.

If we are going to finish in Europa league spots, we need 5-6 new additions to the team, and to keep as many of our players as possible.

    Yep. no doubt about that.

It's not a dilemma that we face, but the teams I mention (and Chelsea) seem hell bent on a top four finish rather than winning a cup - which they all could have realistically if they'd not rested most of their players for Cup games.

I just think that's a pretty sad situation. As a fan I imagine there's nothing better than winning a trophy.

I would be happy with a top 10 TBH, I know we have had a cracking start but need to remain realistic about the squad. Come Jan we lose 2 key player in Ba and Tiote due to the ACoN, hoping to get a couple in as back-up in the transfer window..........

Got to be a cup. Still have very fond memories of our CL outings but have been to wembley 3 times now and still not seen us win. Plus it would break the 60 odd year jinx

Silverware! I want a ****ing trophy! <diva> And then we'll be in Europa that way.

Finish 4th (though it wouldn't happen, obviously) and what, we qualify for CL and get booted out very early on?

Trip to Wembley, a shiny trophy, and Europa League football the following season? Hell to the yes.

    I'd take anything.

    ANYTHING!

Silver would be excellent and so would champs. Realistically I don't think we'll get either, but ya never know!

I'd be happy with 1st place in the league. Then you get silverware and a top 4 finish :)

I'd like a trip to wembley though!

The sad thing is...Half of us wouldn't get a trip to Wembley...With the current corporate bias only about 18 of our fans would actually get a ticket, and even then only by defeating Takeshi's castle!

I'd love the FA, like actually ****ing love it...I'd love all the dicks turning round and saying "its a forgotten tournament, no one cares anymore" as we parade around Newcastle on top of a bus! I also think we'd do alright in the Europa League...Not amazingly, but alright (2nd KO round if we get a kind draw!)

Woo, new folk! Welcome along Chimpz!

I was thinking that, surely even Ashley knows we'd more than sell out a Wembley allocation. I'd have to pray my 7 loyalty points get me in...
