I am one of the "privileged pensioners" who has a comfortable pension and gets a winter allowance. I agree it is wrong, in my case. But where does the line get drawn ? I think too many pensioners will suffer this winter as a result of labour's decision. And, while on this subject, the triple lock pension scheme is unsustainable. It cannot be, considering the increasing life expectation after retirement with the pension demand guaranteed to increase above inflation at a minimum. There is only so much money that can be taken from the tax payers of society.
In a few months it will all be forgotten about, there will be other issues hit the headlines. They are wise to do all this stuff early after the election as the Tories will take some of the blame for raping the economy , however, this won't last forever as the Tories found out by still blaming Labour well over 10 years after they took over ...nobody ever bought that crap
I still can’t wrap my head around how this is true when Starmer stood in parliament and claimed there was a £40bn black hole months before they actually won the election. They knew about it, and if anything’s it’s not as bad as they thought based on his own comments - plus it’s all public data there for all to see. Labour have a get a jail free card for absolutely everything to anyone stupid enough to believe them - “well due to the previous government leaving us in such and such situation we have to do X,Y and Z.”
That was the known future black hole, when they checked the books, there was a current £20b black hole.
Hasn't took long for some to remember what a complete and utter clusterf uck The Tories made of the country in the last 14 years. If Labour have to do some unsavoury things at the beginning of their administration then I do believe they have a certain amount of latitude...however, it isn't open season for too long...results will be to be seen and delivered in the not too distant future
For all of the political ****e people will argue over, decisions about what might affect some and not others.. we were still performing well against GDP and outperforming major EU nations, including the biggest in Germany last time I checked. For the last two months growth has stopped dead in its tracks. And the economy is key. Of course they deserve some time to fix things but as of now it’s just looked like a total disaster of a start.
Depends what you read and who you believe mate. The shared view is £6bn was not visible. The argued view is £14bn was, wasnt, or is self made. I tend to think the £22bn is inflated. I was reading in the Guardian (which is as labour leaning as it gets) that £9bn is caused by the public sector pay settlements Labour have granted. That looks to be reality as far as I can tell. I think they inherited a mess. Generally governments are booted out because they have created a mess. The Tories did. Labour under Blair did. It is about how you recover for me. Sadly, and it is only my opinion, Starmer and co and inflating the scale of the problem they have and expecting us to believe it. They are also going after a group of citiizens in what is at best a blunt and agressive way. Labour have so much good grace after the tory years from so many, this seems like a really naieve start on their part, to me at least. I am nervous about what next to be honest.
Really Rooch, they've already caved into the Train Drivers...watch this space, the money they're taking off the pensioners is going into the train drivers back pockets...It'll have zilch effect on the £20 Billion black hole they're hanging their policies on.
All incoming governments claim they've inherited a mess it's how they deal with it and so far I'm not impressed.
Haven’t all incoming governments inherited a mess? Otherwise they wouldn’t be coming in. Mind , new governments don’t usually come in and freeze their senior citizens to death to save paying out pensions.
