Ah ok Hence the question mark Confused with it first being agreed for 1974, but that will have been before Harold Wilson 1974 win. Although technically every Govt/Parliament has to renew bank holidays and their dates every year anyway.
No, the Act came into force in 1971 when it got Royal Ascent and became Law. The Act never listed NYD as a bank holiday though. It was that decision that was taken later.
It wasn’t passed in 1971. “What is formally known as the Employment (holiday extension and early retirement) bill was proposed in December 1971 by Denis Howell MP, as a private member’s bill, but it failed to secure approval. Curiously, there then seems to be an almost total absence of any debate or commentary about the proposal to make New Year’s Day a bank holiday until it suddenly popped into existence as a Royal Proclamation in October 1973 following a government announcement earlier that month.”

Football league referee, survived a car bomb on his drive.
I wouldn't call serving in Afghanistan, and elsewhere, bland. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Last week I posted on my business page on Facebook, about it being the 46th anniversary of Keith Moon's death and someone sent me this, even for those of us who can just about manage to play the drums, replicating what he did is pretty much impossible (there's no sound until they actually start playing around 1.15)...
