1 win in 5 needs sorting and fast. SL has backed LM and I honestly believe he wants a top six position. 1 don’t see him getting the easy ride this season. The next five games are going to be so important LM has to start producing the results needs to improve and points need to be gained.
The league is so strong again I honestly can’t see us being top 6 When I watch Leeds, Sunderland, WBA etc they are a lot better than we are at the moment I don’t think we will be in a relegation scrap but maybe top 10 if we’re lucky
It’s difficult to predict now. Our new players need to gel into the squad so we can find consistency. ‘Consistency’ - that’s a word that gets used in reference to Bristol City season after season and it still applies now. So far we have seen flashes of brilliance punctuated by dross. It’s tempting to say that a big factor in our 3-0 defeat on Saturday was Dickie’s absence - and whilst it may have had SOME affect, it’s important to remember that we had already conceded 5 goals (6 of you count our cup defeat to Coventry) with him in the side. Our defence - which was one of our strengths last season - has become our main weakness and that needs to be corrected asap. We fans also need to be measured in our reactions. I’ve seen posts on various forums calling for Manning to be sacked - come on - it’s ONE defeat FFS - what if we had started the season like Cardiff?? The referee also played a part in our concessions and results. I know that poor refereeing decisions tend to balance out over the season but giving Milwall a penalty which should not have been awarded is not a defensive error on our part. I also don’t blame the defence or Max for Derby’s first goal on Saturday - it was a lucky snap shot which miraculously found its way through a crowded box and was deflected into the corner. It happens - and IF we had been awarded just one of the big penalty shouts then the game would have taken on a very different dynamic. Yes it didn’t - and we lost 3-0 - but what I’m trying to say is that it’s far too early to be panicking. As I’ve said earlier we need to work on our defence but at the same time recognising that not ALL of the goals were down to poor defending. We are Bristol City; one win and we’re going to win the league. One defeat and we’re doomed.
As said we will have as far better idea in 5 games times-could go either way but one win in five is not good.
I didn’t watch Derby so not going to comment on that one however I have liked the way we have played so far this season, it’s much better than at periods last season which were awful at times. he’s been backed with the players he’s wanted so we need to see what he’s about, no point screaming and shouting after 5 games into a new season, let’s see after 15+ games. The only thing that disappoints me is the lack of options in goal, Max is number one fair enough but I think we’re stuffed if he gets injured.
I agree although against Hull we threw 2 points away I thought O’Leary could have done better with Derbys first goal and he also went awol at one point, but you’re right there’s no in depth cover for him
You would have ben saying a diffrent thing if you watched that second half.-abysmal Tom not seen city play like this for years.
Our 2nd half performance at Derby was an exact repeat performance of the capitulation at Preston last year. We're OK playing pretty patterns between Vyner, Naismith and co but ffs we need more bottle and backbone when things get difficult.
those strikes in a crowded box at any corner/ free kick, corners mostly have a opportunism about them thats 2 in 2 from 4 games! Goalies [ obviously ] dont have a chance with them, thats why they get highligted when it is a goal! quite a few shots end up with being stopped or diverted by an involuntary deflection!
Change the record now, Red Robin; we didn't start well last season under NP either, but I didn't hear you screaming for him to go... He's gone, get over your man crush on NP and get behind the new manager and team. Everyone else seems to have but you ffs..
I have seen glimpses of a improvement in the play but let's say many across many forums are not on board with your conclusion he is a upgrade. we wait and see what he brings to the table- We all want success Liam has been backed Nige was not it is Liam's squad he needs to produce the goods and so far 1 win in 5 is poor run carry that for the remaining season it would be a disaster. Those are facts
We are where we are, he needs time to gel the new players. But he has been backed so it’s now up to him, and no excuses.
Too many people were seduced by the 'big name' as you were. To say Nige wasn't backed is completely disingenuous. He was given quite a bit of money; last summer, he spent c£5m pounds, as well as being given almost £2m to sign Atkinson & Tanner in his first window, when there was NO MONEY coming into the club. He was brought in as a specialist for the situation we were in, and did an ok job, nothing more.
I agree about players needing time to gel. But he seems a bit robotic, it's always on 60 and 75 minutes for subs and his decision to bring on Mehmeti for Bird was beyond words. I'd select the following for our next away game and get back to being difficult to beat. Max Tanner Vyner McNally Roberts Yu Williams Twine Bird Pring Armstrong
This last Window does remind us of the LJ era where lots of players were brought in. In hindsight some said we made a mistake in allowing a rookie to go shopping. Some are already wondering if we haven't made the same mistake again.
Perhaps the board didn't trust Nige to spend it wisely. Not everyone thought he was the messiah; as it turns out, he wasn't. How many of Nige's signings have turned out to be that good - not many is the answer.
