Think we have moved on from Jesus because Madrid want too much. SU are said to have paid Bronby €1.7m for Slimani who I guess JHT will know well. Edit:- 23 years old, 6'2" , and according to wiki his name is Anis Ben Slimane.
Wilder has now said that the move is imminent. He was removed from their lineup last night, having played 90 minutes of their last cup match. Given that Thorup knows him, it seems sensible. He has 30 caps for the Tunisia national team. https://the72.co.uk/2024/08/28/sheffield-united-anis-slimane-to-join-norwich-city/
According to the Wilder interview I read, Slimani removed himself from last night's side. If so, that sits a bit uncomfortably with Thorup's comments re. Jon Rowe, and the desire to build a culture in which Sara is the accepted model for players in these situations.
No, I don't think so; it's not a decision the player should take on him- or herself to make, whatever the state of negotiations.
Tricky one really. Totally agree it's not a culture we want to encourage, and there's obviously a concern that he'd down tools again if he wanted out of Norwich. Although as CarrowCanario says, it's a bit different him doing this if there's a fee and personal terms agreed, Vs Rowe/Kamara when there doesn't appear to have been any more than rumour linking them with an exit at the time they acted as they have. I think the other difference is Slimane was a first-team regular at Brondby, but at Sheffield United has played sporadically and supposedly never in his best role, for more than a season now. That's quite a bit different from Rowe who knew he'd likely start every Norwich game he was available for, or Kamara sulking after just 2-3 games on the bench. I think given our financial position, these are the "market inefficiencies" we need to exploit. We're looking at a young midfielder, known to our management team, who fits a positional need, is allegedly keen for the move, has some knowledge of English football, and presumably won't cost close to the €1.7m Sheffield United paid for him. That kind of opportunity isn't going to crop up too often. There's some interesting clips on twitter of Slimane appearing to be a vocal leader in the dressing room, another characteristic we need to add given the "changing of the guard" going on with our leadership group currently. It's clearly a gamble, but I think signing Slimane for around £1m would be better business than signing Kamara for £2.5m, for example.
I don't see this. If selected to play by the club you are registered to, you play. It's down to the club to decide whether to treat you as available for selection or not. And often that will have been discussed between the two clubs involved; it would be open to us to request that he not be selected for the game. If Wilder's version is correct, there had been no such request, and Slimani was, in United's view, available for selection.
I fully understand why the club would be keen to sign him; but again, if Wilder's account is correct, given our now well-publicised position as regards the culture being encouraged at the club, his withdrawing himself last night can't be seen as anything but a problem. It puts the club in a situation where Jon Rowe, for example, could justifiably call them out for hypocrisy if the signing now goes ahead. It could of course transpire that it was simply Wilder being his mischievous self, as with his comments about Sargent.
