I agree with your point in the main; would've preferred us to spend the money elsewhere in more vital positions (goalkeeper????) However ... Supposedly Charles is going out on loan, so I think we can discount him. Lallana is a sicknote and will barely play. That leaves 6 players for 3 positions. And that's not even considering a potential Alcaraz departure.
And they’re different positions. Downes and Lesley are 6, Mateus, Will and Joe are 8. Dibling is a wide player.
He said in the welcome interview that his idol is Bruno Fernandes, so I’m assuming he’s got that part nailed already
A Portuguese colleague of mine (Sporting fan) rates our Fernandes as having higher ceiling than Bruno

Looked lively, could see he wasn’t on the same page as his teammates for a lot of the time, but most things he did he did well. I think he had a half chance which he looked like he could of done better with, but I’ve not seen it back and might be being a little harsh
He certainly scans and is more aware of what’s around him than Aribo & Smallbone which is a good start at this level
More mobile too which is handy, because our midfield is very stodgy and one-paced now that Stu isn't here anymore
