'Talks are at an early stage' I thought it had come out that we have been in talks for 2 weeks before the news brokeand that we had hoped to have him in before Newcastle so that he could play. <laugh> Are we talking in Entish?

Also assume that as the Steele link keeps coming up, then the injury to Brightons first choice keeper can't be bad because Steele played for Brighton in the opening game.

I think they ruled Verbruggen out for 5-6 weeks and that was 4-5 weeks ago now. So should be back pretty soon

I'm not sure having a short list when it comes to goalkeepers is a good idea. Aren't there any tall ones available?

We’re probably waiting until a goalkeeper becomes available with injuries that will keep him out for half the season. Isn’t that how we sign players.

Southampton in talks over Bijlow deal
    By Mike McGrath, Daily Telegraph

Southampton are advancing in talks over a deal for Holland goalkeeper Justin Bijlow from Feyenoord.

Russell Martin is looking for a keeper following Gavin Bazunu’s serious Achilles injury, with Bijlow high on the list looked at by the club.

It is understood that further discussions have taken place in the last 24 hours with hope that a deal can be struck for the 26-year-old, who has won eight caps for his country and came through the Feyenoord academy system.

Alex McCarthy, 34, started in goal against Newcastle last weekend and was guilty of a kicking error for the winner in the opening-weekend defeat. Joe Lumley was on the bench for Martin and it is thought that adding a keeper was among his priorities in the market to add competition.

Feyenoord have started this season with German keeper Timon Wellenreuther in goal, with Bijlow on the bench in the first matches since Brian Priske took charge following Arne Slot’s departure to Liverpool.

Bijlow was No1 for Slot but last season sustained two injuries, to his wrist and calf, that saw him sidelined for periods of the campaign, with Wellenreuther deputising on those occasions.

He has been linked with the Premier League before but has always remained at the Eredivisie club, where he has won two titles - one under Slot - and two KNVB Cups.

His Netherlands caps also came under Slot and he was picked for the last World Cup and Euros although did not make an appearance in the finals.

McCarthy, meanwhile, came back into the team at the back end of last season and played an important role in securing promotion through the play-offs by beating Leeds United at Wembley.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Flynn Downes had their loans turned into permanent deals, while Adam Lallana was re-signed, with Cameron Archer and Ben Brereton Diaz added to the attack, but a goalkeeper was not added before the season started.

I’ve heard he’s good in the air but not so good as a shot stopper

I believe he leaked a few goals last season that got just in below as he dived

Now, where did I put my coat?

Dutch media suggesting it might be a loan with an obligation (no idea if thats if certain things are met like staying up for example)

You’d have to assume it would be otherwise there isn’t a lot of point as it doesn’t seem like the sort of fee that we desperately need to defer to another window. Or number of appearances. Don’t see how that benefits them though

Presumably it's the best offer they've had, reduces their wage bill and, assuming he wants to play football, potentially saves them from having an unhappy player in the squad.

And for us? I guess it allows us to monitor both him and Bazunu’s recovery. And if the transfer is appearance based (which it would have to be I expect) then that works as well

Loan with obligation makes a lot of sense for PSR accounting - and for Bijlow/Ramsdale as a safeguard against being contracted to a Championship side, if there's a get-out clause on relegation
