By the current rules, it was a red.

Whether we want that as a rule, is another question!

I'm afraid so. Would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Schar had gone down like he'd been shot by a sniper as well mind. Diaz will be the subject of many memes and gif's now !

No, he doesn’t lunge. He sees Diaz move in and goes to do the forehead-to-forehead stand off but Diaz acts like an absolute twat and cons the referee.

Yes but it should have been 2 reds. Bit put their head together. If you send off one you send off both.

Ref was appallingly bad on Saturday, not just for that but throughout the course of the game. Complete and utter cockwomble

No because it wasn't violent conduct. Diaz needs his yellow lifted to two yellows.

Agreed that was one of the worst referee performances i've ever seen even without the red card.

The refs want respect well don't be completely useless at your job then.

If Diaz doesn't go down it's not even a yellow.

They say they want to stop diving/play acting well stop sending people off for that then, in fact send that greasy haired **** off instead.

Yes of course it was a red, those incidents always are, and Schar knew that. Put your forehead into someone else's face and push and you'll always get sent off....no matter how light it was and how much the other guy fakes injury.

Brereton is obviously a pathetic cheating liar though, and he has come out of this far worse than Schar.

By the rules, it's technically red.
But then the same rule should apply to Diaz.

    Not a red card.

    Law 12

    VIOLENT CONDUCT

Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.

    Schar did not

    1. use excessive force or brutality
    2. Deliberately strike an opponent

Plus, in any event, any force or striking that may have occurred the force used was negligible.

If only referees knew what the Laws of the Game actually say.

What I find laughable is it took 30 mins of our match to clearly highlight the new VAR flaw where they won’t get involved when they probably should. The issue is refs are always biased to the bigger clubs, so now they get to perform like Pawson, and VAR stays silent in the face of big 6 bias. Yet everyone will have done their “job” correctly.

OMG, I actually agree with Souness. It must be the end of the world! <yikes>

"The referee should have booked Schar and sent Brereton Diaz off. There is nothing worse in today's game than cheating!"

What I saw from most games I watched at the weekend (and highlights) is that for the most part the onfield decision has been final (think it was only the Everton penalty that needed a review and was reversed). I think we’re gonna see a lot more of referee decisions this season as oppose to them not making their ****ing minds up previously. Pawson was a ****ing disgrace even before the sending off and it never improved at all. Be interesting to see if we appeal and it it’s overturned…I’d be surprised as that ultimately points the blame at VAR for not recommending a review. ****ers.
