Yes. I guess it was because we had Romeu and JWP who played nearly every game. Atalanta got him first team and I think European football as well. Whereas even if we were in for him we might have lost out on those fronts

I do remember the name from back then. The season he moved and the season before. Probably should have been the signing instead of Diallo. That was a weird one because he was signed due to Sangare’s failed WP but was a very different type of midfielder. Almost like a “desperate for bodies” signing.

Diallo was very highly rated, by Arsenal, Everton and Seville. French journos, "Kante-esque, he never loses the ball!", also saying the PL suited and later Man City could be his potential. So a potential minor coup of a signing.

Sad we saw essentially the opposite of that!

 

They had three from us, back in the day. Shearer, Flowers and Kenna.
Plus, we know Szmodics, BBD and Arma can score it ****load of goals in the Championship.

 

It is a question, do we consistently sign young players who lots of teams think have potential, and we are always wrong and they’re ****. Or are we bad at coaching them to their potential/bad at spotting character issues which stop them reaching their potential?

Obviously it’s not an exact science and a promising player at 20 might never amount to much or we could be asking too much of them too soon which could also hinder them, giving up on them too soon because we need them to be performing straight away. It’s probably a lot of different factors, but Brighton seem to be the model everyone is looking at currently and most of the players they sign go out on loan for a bit before being thrown in, we just throw them straight in

 

Did those French journos actually watch him? He was nothing like Kante. He didn’t even like playing in that kind of role. And I struggle to believe that was down to us and our training/coaching

Indeed SM. At least it was a thread, and not much else, but a thread nevertheless. Hopefully there will be more fruitful threads in the coming days, and l am trying to be hopeful...hmm...

Did use the words 'right now' in fairness to him. Which is exactly the phrase he used when he also said: "There is some stuff we were on with that we have dropped because they've gone elsewhere or we can't afford to pay the fee right now."

Maybe I am being too hopeful but I don't think using 'right now' is unintentional

 

I did find “right now” to be strange - especially given how close Atalanta appeared to be (in that you don’t make 5 bids if personal terms are not agreed)

 

As I mentioned the other day it could be taken 2 ways. Either right now as in we are hopeful of raising funds to match Celtics asking price, or right now as in we hope Celtic will lower their price later in the window.
