He struck the ball towards the bottom corner n the GK made a good save It wasn't a sitter, it was a great chance but not a sitter - if he had lots of time id say it was a sitter. It had nothing to do with his body positioning, he was trying to get it onto his stronger left foot so had to check his run a little bit to allow it to go across his body. He would have been better taking it on his right, youll see so many championship strikers missing similar chances this season He should be in this league n he is, of course he needs to improve especially with his back to goal. He did a lot of positive things n most importantly he was a goal threat - 4 shots in a game is very good, he made those shots with his movement n his positioning He was close to scoring n worked hard out of possession for the team He showed more in that game yesterday than our strikers did last season (i kmow that doesn't say much) Hes nowhere near the worst striker weve had in our history, he actually tried n showed bits of quality
I thought he had an alright game and considering his age, the pressure of the role combined with his inexperience, and his physical attributes it was a decent start and he's worth sticking with. I don't want us to make the same mistake we did with Hemir where we binned him off at the first opportunity, let's finally show a bit of faith with a striker and give them a fair go.
I've just had a proper look at the Mayenda one on one yesterday. (Edit - I started typing before Scout posted but it took me ages ) I thought it was a good save, at the time, rather than a bad miss and, watching the highlights, still think the same. The keeper takes up a good position and Mayenda gets the shot on target. Another inch or so and the keeper's foot doesn't reach but a few more inches again and the ball's going wide. Jobe's ball actually slowed at the moment Mayenda reached it .... backspin? Although Mayenda is at full pelt I think he should've scored and would if that chance came again. He just couldn't sort his feet out much like Rashford, yesterday at 28 seconds*, who isn't running as quickly and doesn't even hit the target, he also doesn't have a defender within yards of him. Mayenda was, as is often the case with young players, trying too hard at times and needs a goal to take the spring out of his back *
Yeh agree I thought he got to the ball wrong footed and as you say sort of checked to go on his stronger foot the lads a work in progress let’s hope people allow for this and give the lad a chance, compared to what we saw last season he’s definitely improving
Some fans write players off straight away not realising it takes time to settle into a new team/country etc I hear folk raving about Latte at boro (who i really like) but he got off to a poor start so he would have been slagged off non stop to begin with. I remember when Amad played a few games for us, folk wrote him off and said he was useless - he gets a run of games and shows his true ability
He played against two seasoned CHs, yes he's not the finished article but he gave his all which we never saw from Burstow. If he'd taken his chance we would all be writing something completely different, small margins in football.
It was more the fact that alot of our moves broke down due to his back to goal. Got absolutely beasted nearly every time the ball. He did offer and do more than Burstow. You're absolutely correct in that. He won't be a bad option of the bench. His quite explosive.
Agree with a lot of this, loads of pressure on the kid right now. Needs help, I think an experienced striker would benefit him loads in training learning off him and seeing how he plays. I hope he’s involved a lot this season.
As Cumbrian says fine margins a goal soon off his shin bum anywhere will do the lad the world of good
If I could be bothered I'd go back and find the thread from the 1-1 draw at Luton. I was at the game and it was a real battle from the start, Amad was being kicked from the first minute but stuck at it and almost scored. I thought he'd done well although he'd panicked a couple of times, shooting when there were better options. But I thought he'd shown confidence to get in the right positions and try to test the keeper, something no one else was doing. When I got home and looked at the match thread he'd taken as much of a battering on here as he had on the pitch ... ... incredibly some had him as their MOTM
This was my issue yesterday. Didnt give us the wall pass. Back to goal he wasnt strong enough or use hia body properly. The chance was a very good one. Needed to take it right footed and pass it across the keeper whose positioning was inviting that to be honest. There is a player in there though, no doubt. 6 months of hard work on the training pitch can transform a raw striker. Keep him and use him as sub option, cup games, and work him hard in training. Might just see a real threat second half of season.
Totally agree. He was kicked, pushed, virtually assaulted but kept coming back for more. It didn't put him off. I think the lad has the right attitude and is worth his place.
Sorry mate i really dont understand how and what he did at any point for you to say he had a good game. I dont mean to be harsh on the lad, but im just being honest and stand by everything ive said about him. He's well and truely out of his depth at the moment. Maybes in a few years he'll become a good player, but right now he should be no where near the Championship imo
Good game would be a bit of a stretch but I thought he did ok. Got a few shots off, positioned himself well for the chance he missed. The main thing he needs to improve on is getting used to holding off defenders with his back to goal but that's easily coached, he's big and strong enough. Didn't see anything that would justify writing him off after one game, what would you say was that terrible about his performance?
Its not just one game though is it. Weve all seen enough of him since he's signed and ive seen no signs of improvement from him. Hes a million miles away from being a Championship striker right now. I posted this on another thread. Look at how much of the goal he had to aim for if he had the ability to use his right foot. Instead though he shaped up awkwardly so he could use his strongest left foot and he missed an absolute sitter. Luckily we won yesterday so we got away with it, but we cant expect to do anything this season if he's starting games.
He's tried to wrongfoot the keeper. The obvious finish is across the keeper with the right foot, sweeping the ball away into the far corner. He's hoping the keeper takes that step which opens up the near post left foot finish. It almost comes off, it takes a very good save with his foot to keep the ball out. To call him the worst striker you've ever seen for us is a joke. What about Danny Graham? Ambling about the pitch not giving a ****e. Or Grigg, who'd rather have been anywhere else. Remember a young lad on loan around 2004 called Simon Johnson? Completely and utterly ineffective, didn't even muster a shot. Even Kaz Sterling, looked shocking. Mayenda is 19 and theres signs there he can be a good player. He came up against two very physical CBs who were obviously going to try and bully him. It worked mostly, but the lad got shots off, which is what you want from your striker. Another day one or two of them might end up in the net. Jumping down the lads throat after one game (which many of our fans will do btw) will just breed anxiety not confidence. Patience needed, hes starting at the minute out of necessity but I highly doubt anyone at the club expects him to be the main man all season.
One game this season under the new coach. However you want to say it we've seen nowhere near enough of him to say he's not good enough. Yeah he should have scored but you're making way too much of it imo. He still got a shot on target that took a good save to keep it out.
