I've Just been informed that George Herd has passed away. I never saw him play football but what a character and a pleasure to be around. Fantastic stories. R. I. P Marra
Aw bloody hell, devastated to hear that. Absolutely cracking bloke. Hadn’t seen him for about six months when he rapped in on account of his arthritis. Gutted. Sleep tight George.
He popped into Castle Eden not so long back. It was nice to see him back there. I played golf with him a few times and I'd always push his trolley up the 14th and 18th for him. His locker was next door to mine.
RIP George, one of my favourite players of all time. A true gentleman, he escorted my 10 year old daughter on a tour of Roker Park as a birthday treat. My condolences to his family and friends
What a shame, cracking little player, pigeon chested and gave his all each game, saw him play lots during the early sixties. RIP must be a decent age.
Part of one of my favourite teams , Montgomery,Irwin,Ashurst,Harvey, Hurley, Mcnab,Usher, HERD, Sharkey ,Crossan, Mulhall . George was a true gentleman though I recall him being sent off at Hull when we were absolutely cheated in a second FA cup replay against Leeds conceding a last minute dubious penalty . Totally out of character both George and his colleague George Mulhall confronted the referee and both got themselves sent off , it later transpired that the Leeds players had been told to dive if they got anywhere near our penalty area . Revie and his team always cheating !!! RIP George , Herd will always be fondly remembered by SAFC supporters .
He used to get in the off license in Cleadon many, many years ago....if I can remember correctly Newcastle Brown Ale was his tipple. Seemed a hell of a guy as he spoke to everyone and seemed to have a hell of a sense of humor. Another one of the great guys leaves us to go upstairs.....god bless....RIP.
I’ve just relayed that team and the sending off story to my missus whose not interested in football one little bit….she just looked at me shook her head and said it’s a pity you can’t remember what you did last week
