Former counter-terror chief accuses Farage of inciting Southport violence

Neil Basu – a former senior Scotland Yard officer who was in charge of counter-terrorism from 2018 to 2021 – said there were “real world consequences” when public figures failed to “keep their mouth shut”.

“Nigel Farage is giving the EDL [English Defence League] succour, undermining the police, creating conspiracy theories, and giving a false basis for the attacks on the police,” he said, referring to the far-right, Islamophobic group whose supporters are believed to have been involved in the rioting in Southport.

“Has Nigel Farage condemned the violence, has he condemned the EDL? Fomenting discord in society is what these people seem to exist for,” Basu added.

Say Britain's "proudly woke" police officer. I'd expect you to post him.

What is happening goes way beyond anything Farage said about authorities keeping the public in the dark (which they have been). If the police had been up front about the nature of the Southport child killer (without naming him), then social media speculation would have lost traction. The authorities are part of the problem.

Depends doesn't it? If he is not Muslim then the EDL Farage and apologists for racism slink back into the undergrowth without so much as an apology. If it had been revealed that he was of Muslim origin what do you think would have happened then? You really are a simpleton sometimes.

There's nothing simpleton about telling the public the truth, even if you personally would like it concealed. Just be honest with them. It's years of mistrust on the consequences of mass immigration by the Tories and Labour that is causing this. It's done for the Tories, and it will for Labour which, let's remember, did not increase its votes over Corbyn.

Mass immigration contributed to the murder of those little girls. With fewer immigrants, the authorities would have been able to monitor incomers and pick out for extra scrutiny the psychopaths

Except of course the desirable psychopaths who would get in because of their wealth or connections. For them no bars to their entry or monitoring required because they are desirable.

I won't deny great wealth buys power and influence. It's a hostage to fortune for authorities here though, if a wealthy immigrant or a member of his family are a risk to the public, and the authorities don't act.

Incidentally, the reason I felt an early description of the Southport offender might have been wise, is that Rwanda is a Catholic country, so the killer probably isn't Muslim. I see they've named him now.

Farage knew exactly what he was doing and what effect his words could have. He will have known about the lies spreading like wildfire on social media. His saying that the truth was being withheld from the public just gave the morons justification for continuing to believe the lies and to disbelieve the police and responsible media. He incited the riots.

Farage said 3 things (as reported in The Times today) -

    1. The offender may or may not have been monitored by UK security forces.

    2. The authorities say this is a non-terror incident, but then, they said that about the soldier stabbed recently, so is it true?

    3. Is the truth being withheld from the public? Farage did not know, but it was a fair and legitimate question to ask.

He didn't say anything about Muslims, asylum seekers or dinghies. The killings and, to an extent, the falsehoods put out by some posters on Twitter, caused the rioting. Not Farage. I hope he continues to use his new position as an MP to ensure the truth is put to the public, unless there are compelling security reasons for withholding it.

As I said, he knew the effect his words would have. He will have known about the false stories and he could have callled them out, thereby calming the situation. Instead, he gave the lies credence by suggesting that the truth was being hidden. It was deliberate.

Farage's tweet was sent out on Tuesday night. By Tuesday afternoon, it had been made public that the killer's parents came from Rwanda. But the information did not come from the authorities, it came through MSM. That was what Farage was complaining about, because all that had come from the authorities was that the killer came originally from Cardiff (later changed to, born in Cardiff) but nothing more, including nothing about Rwanda.

Farage's complaint had nothing to do with mad conspiracy theorists on Twitter. He wanted information from the police, rather than information filtered out through MSM

Wonderful. I give you the facts - you can't deny them, so you let your prejudices take over, and throw in some abuse for good measure.

The 'facts' you gave me don't tell the full story. You choose to ignore the fact that Farage will have known all about the false social media stories and may well also have known that disturbances were planned by some of his far right supporters. He could have calmed the situation by declaring that the 'Muslim who just got off a boat' stories were nonsense, whilst still saying that more information should be put out by the authorities. Instead, he deliberately inflamed the situation by cryptically saying that the truth was being withheld from the public, thereby giving credence to the lies. His statement in itself was factual - they hadn't named the suspect - but its implication was deliberately provocative.

Ah, so you're now criticising him for what he didn't say, even though the only information given out officially was that the killer was born in Cardiff. It's for the police or the government to correct misinformation. They chose not to at that time and kept their cards close to their chest. So Farage was entitled to say that he thought it possible the authorities were deliberately holding back information that could have been shared with the public.

What evidence do you have that Farage is in any way connected to the Tommy Robinsons and right wing football crowd that caused some of the problems? Anything at all?

They're his target audience. The more riots there are, the better for Farage and his limited company.

<laugh> So no evidence whatsoever then. Farage's target audience are the 4 million plus that voted for him. I hope you're not getting your information from that sexual deviant, Brendan Cox, who had to resign from two charities because of sex assaults
