I think he’s more of a striker than winger, mind. Can’t see Ross Stewart playing many games at all next season there…
He played the equivalent of 25 games last season in terms of minutes at this level and got 11 goals and two assists. 38 appearances in total so usually fit. This time last season we were saying we wouldn’t touch Simms at that price and he had similar stats for us. I think we could probably get him for slightly less but valuing him much below 3.5m would be unrealistic these days.
He can play both but primarily plays left wing or as a left inside forward as opposed to centre forward. It’ll be interesting to see if Stewart features. A fit Stewart would be ideal for then but there’s a big question mark on his fitness
I wouldn't spend the money because I don't think he's a good fit. Poor in possession, poor presser, not great at hold up play. Has nice movement in the box and is a good finisher though. I still wouldn't buy Simms even with the hindsight of his good second half of the season, his terrible start to the season was the reason Coventry finished outside of the playoffs.
Actually I think Robins was. He played three at the back initially and they only improved when they went to a flat back four. Took a few games to then hit form but they stopped conceding as soon as he changed formation.
Out of interest did you see him much for Wednesday? I can’t say I saw much of him really so couldn’t say how he usually plays style wise. Last season seemed to be something of a breakthrough with things clicking for him.
Depends really, between August and Boxing Day Simms played 1211 minutes and only scored 2 goals. For comparison, Rusyn played 793 minutes in the whole season and scored 2 goals. They gave him time and a good environment for him to succeed in the 2nd half of the season though, something we haven't done.
I remember he had 1 good game for them when i watched - cant mind who it was against tho but the other games i watched i wasnt overly impressed Loved him as a young player coming through but hasnt really kicked on Not against us signing him btw but not at 4.5 million
I think you’re gonna struggle to find a striker who scores goals especially at our level for less than 5m. So I’m assuming taking a risk on someone in Europe potentially? think it’s just pure wishful thinking to expect a striker who’s scored champ goals to move for less
So are we all agreed we need to sign a 20 goal a season ready made striker for £1.5m. Now I wonder where we'll pick one of those up from?
Danny Rohl has shown himself very capable of making silk purses out of sow's ears so I'd be slightly wary of judging him on last season's stats (which are boosted by his six months at Sheff Weds) in isolation.
Don't really care about goals scored for other clubs, too many mitigating factors. I care about fit. Mayenda has been playing as the main forward in pre season because of his work rate and the fact he's the best with his back to goal out of the 3 forwards we have. That isn't Ugbos style, he's a poacher. I like Mendy for his back to goal play and his ability to receive the ball, I think he'd be a much better fit.
Oh well of course that makes sense but either way mate regardless of fit no striker who’s scoring goals in this league is going for less than 4-5m in this market. so if that’s the case maybe risking it on a European goalscorer is the move but then you have the concern of him not adapting.
Well there were two possibilities in the post you responded too so quite easy to see where the confusion arose. And to be fair we did have a centre forward that season until 28th January, ( I know he was injured at the start of the season too) so I wouldn’t blame the club for that timing
Ah yeah I’m not mate was just simply saying if we had a decent CF that would have made the difference really. That’s how crucial they are imo. The amount of chances we’ve had over pre season already where the ball flies across the box but there’s no decent striker with the natural instinct to make the right runs to finish it off it’s been an issue since Stewart got injured
They aren't which means if we are going to be spending £5m on a singular player (something we haven't done since our last premier league season) it has to be someone that fits. If the club thinks Ugbo does then I back it, just can't see the fit from my perspective. Especially when you look at RLBs forwards at Lorient and his preference for Mayenda in this pre season. I'd back a signing from abroad that fits the system to adapt quicker than an English player who doesn't if you get me.
